Rutgers University New Brunswick Early Action for Fall 2023

Ah! That’s where I saw the 2/15 date.

I think the issue is Rutgers has clearly made a material change to they way it is handling early admissions versus past years and done nothing to help reset students expectations. That’s the humane student-centric thing to do – to tell people that they will be handling things differently this year and to expect X, Y and Z. Having a “by X” decision date is meaningless because they have always had that and usually still done rolling admissions for a wide range of students well before then.

This year they seem to have prioritized OOS and international admits to NB and seem to be holding out for likely one big last-minute drop for all in-state students to the main campus. Given they also are switching to the Common App next year, it’s likely this is part of a general strategic shift to act more like non-state-run peers, perhaps as part of a long term plan to climb in the rankings. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing more things like yield protection, and perhaps waiting so long is partly for that reason – to wait out some people getting other early decisions and withdrawing. But just speculating, and it doesn’t matter.

The bottom line is often the difference between managing change well and poorly is how effectively you communicate it, and on that front they have either through negligence or cold strategy decided not to communicate it at all. There is zero reason they couldn’t have. Take a look at MIT for an example of the opposite extreme. They are extremely communicative in exactly how the process works, what to expect, any change they make, etc. They know students are sweating the details, reading into every little thing as is human nature, and want to deescalate the stress as much as possible.

Agreed. Rutgers should communicate better.

Not sure that OOS has been prioritized…we are OOS and my daughter, as well as my husband and I, is anxiously awaiting to hear from Rutgers NB as it is her top choice. As much as we would like to hear, we do know that they said 1/31…it’s is almost here…hang tight:)

Yup, same. That no OOS notices have yet been noted here or on reddit supports that.

They’re switching over to the Common App next year?? Where’d you hear about this? Can you please shar, did not know about this. Very surprising.

Our NJ HS counselor shared that news recently. Apparently it was announced by the Rutgers rep who came to an assembly at the school recently for current HS juniors.

Since a couple people have commented that OOS haven’t received any admissions yet, this is what I was referring to from earlier in this topic.

Oh really wow, that is so surprising, really cool to find out. That’s amazing, Rutgers is finally switching over to Common App, it’ll be so much easier for future applicants. Thanks for sharing

Hearing 1/31, friend works at NB. Number of applicants exceeded what school was anticipating. International notified do not know about the OOS.

Is RD still

Also the problem with Rutgers is they have 7 colleges and each student can apply to 3 different colleges and all have to be reviewed separately like 3 different applications. There is no first/second preferences. Its 3 times compared to other schools because other schools will not evaluate secondary option if first major is accepted

does it mean that Rutgers will only release the decision once all 3 schools have made a decision?

Did anyone have a new widget add to their portal that allows you to Add a School - If your interests or plans have changed, there’s still time to add another Rutgers school to your application.
