Hey!
So I am from NY and I am currently in the process of getting my bachelor’s degree in accounting from SUNY Albany. Like most accounting majors, I am planning on taking the CPA exam. I would like to earn the additional/required 30 credit hours by getting a master’s degree in accounting; possibly forensic accounting (but that has not been solidified).
Anyway, I am going to definitely apply to SUNY Albany for grad school, but I also want to have other options in case. Being that I would be a graduate student, a lot of SUNYs (if not all) have zero on-campus housing for grad students. Rutgers does have this option. However, I have some concerns:
- Out of state tuition... worth it?
- Being accepted into RBS... isn't it really selective?
- The difference between Rutgers and SUNY Albany... would the transition be difficult?
I applied to Rutgers from my undergrad and I was denied at New Brunswick; I had a 3.75 GPA coming out of community college. At SUNY Albany, my GPA is lower because it’s more difficult, but it’s not bad. I just am not sure if it is good enough for Rutgers. However, I heard that graduate school is more lenient in general as far as acceptance and difficulty of courses? Idk about this…
I love Rutgers! That is why I am so curious about it. Anyone have any knowledge on the business school; specifically for grad students? Especially out of state students?
The main campus of RBS is in Newark (although some classes in the flex MBA program you can take at New Brunswick, but the traditional MBA is only offered at Newark). It’s a great school, and the MBA program there is highly ranked (top 50).
You mentioned on-campus housing being a concern, there are brand new graduate student (apartment style) dorms that opened up at 15 Washington St, a very short walk from RBS, so you could live on campus if you wanted.
Is Out of state tuition worth it? Well, if you can get a top 50 school education for less money elsewhere, I’d consider other options. Especially if it was significantly cheaper (or if you had a company paying for it). Aside from cost, Rutgers has a great proximity to NYC (20 min away!), a good brand, and solid academics.
Yeah, I don’t think that any SUNY school is ranked in the top 50 graduate business schools. I know that Rutgers has an extremely well-regarded business school, and I’ve always wanted to go there.
I have heard that graduate courses are only offered through the Newark campus, but I wasn’t sure if this was accurate. I know that the New Brunswick campus is Rutgers’ flagship, and therefore is the more selective and “better” campus, but only Newark offers master’s programs for accounting? I do not think I am going for my MBA (although that is a possibility too); I am leaning towards the MS in accounting route.
I am worried that Newark is no safe though… How is the surrounding area for the university?
