Hey, I'm currently a senior in high school living in NJ. I was recently accepted to both engineering schools, but I am having trouble deciding on which one to attend. The main things I am looking for are:

-Academics
-Costs
-Social life
-Job placement upon graduation

NJIT:
- $3,000-$5,000 tuition and commuting

Rutgers:
- $25,000+/- tuition, room and board

Rutgers is definitely a better environment to receive an education and it edges NJIT over academics just by a bit, but is it worth paying extra and going into a lot of debt? At NJIT, I would graduate with little debt and be even able to pursue graduate school, but I am not sure if the inexpensiveness be worth at the expense of a better environment to learn in.

Honestly both schools provide very good engineering programs, although you may have more specialized training in the engineering field at NJIT, since they are tech specific. In terms of social life, I would highly suggest Rutgers. I find the NJIT campus to be very dull and atmospherically unappealing. If it matters to you, research on the diversity on the NJIT campus as well. If you want to go to grad school though, NJIT all the way! It would save you the money youll need for grad school. Good luck

This is a very interesting question. My son has applied and been accepted to Rutgers SOE and to NJIT – and has been admitted to the Honors programs in both schools. The schools offer very contrasting attributes:

RUTGERS:
Flagship school type social scene
Probably a stronger engineering reputation
Slightly broader variety of engineering disciplines
Probably one of the best programs in the country if you don’t know what engineering discipline you want to pursue
Engineering living learning community on Busch campus

NJIT:
Much more compact campus in a very urban environment
More opportunities to do undergraduate research as an underclassman
More developed co-op program, with up to two terms
Consistent focus on technology throughout the curriculum
Fewer massive lecture style classes than Rutgers

In short, Rutgers probably has the better reputation and social experience, but NJIT will offer you the opportunity to have a more distinctive, hands-on academic experience than Rutgers
