I feel for you PA! I am glad our first son did ED to UVA, and our second son only applied to USC, VT, and W&M.

Have a safe trip!

I feel for you PA! I am glad our first son did ED to UVA, and our second son only applied to USC, VT, and W&M.

Have a safe trip!

My purpose for listing the chancellors and Presidents was for the purpose of showing the individual who doubted my intelligence regarding the college that they were wrong, not to provide a reason for attending the college. And I do understand the plight of your son: go somewhere where he gets the royal treatment or somewhere where he is average. I agree the schools are different and have different missions. I feel if he were to come here he could find his niche. Regarding Jefferson and UVA, I have taken a class solely devoted to Mr. Thomas Jefferson. At that time the Wren Building was where students were housed and took classes. Jefferson did not find this appealing as younger kids also attended the school. This made it difficult to study. However, you cannot discount the fact that his education he received in philosophy was a tremendous inspiration while he attended the college. Without it, the rotunda and academic village in its entirety may never have been established. His education in philosophy prompted him to read Palladio's Four Books, causing him to draw on the styles of ancient antiquities such as the Pantheon. Perhaps UVA does owe a little more gratitude hahaha. Good luck to your son choosing which school to attend.

Another humorous thought: maybe he or she is actually a waitlisted USC applicant trying to make my son choose W&M.

Or could it be a waitlisted W&M person trying to get me to send my S to USC because I feel sorry about the apparent condescending attitude?

Or.....

Oh well, I need to get back to watching my movie, "Conspiracy Theory." lol

Thanks Tribe, and these last few posts were my feeble attempts to lighten everything up, please don't take them personally!

Weren't you supposed to be at the library?

If you are a true W&M student, tell me the nickname of Paul's Deli? lol

I hate thread drama.

That being said I'll announce that I sent in my deposit and I'm going to South Carolina in the fall! Some of the reasons that made me choose SC is my scholarship, the capstone invite, the programs of study, the campus, the sports and the WEATHER. I'm so excited!

that is so cool, jubilee. Congrats to you!

My S is not deciding until April 30!!!!!

He wants to see how his big scholarship interview turns out. He will be going to interview on April 10th-11th. This scholarship can be used at any college.

welcome to Gamecock country jubilee!

as far as Tribe making tempers rise "over here",if he had just wanted to answer your question, namtrag he could have done so over on the W&M thread.hope he has a great time in the library all weekend.
Fortunately S at USC has time to go to Late Night Carolina this evening with a free comedian, free food, free use of the gameroom in the Russell House, free caracitures, music, etc. And if he wants to get up tomorrow morning, he can watch The Old Ball Coach and his team scrimmage.Does W&M have a football team?
I went over to the W&M thread. Was surprised to learn not all the dorms are air conditioned. Is that normal at Virginia schools? I would have thought they were far enough "south" to warrant air.

Sadly enough, a/c is not prevalent in Va yet. In fact, my S saw that W&M didn't have many A/C dorms, and was pretty frightened. I told him I survived, and so can you if you go there. Of course, if your "doc" gives you a note, they let you bring a window unit.

W&M has a football team at I-AA level. In the past they have been nationally-ranked, but for the last 2 seasons, they have been sub .500. I think it was 3 seasons ago, they made it to the final four in the football playoffs.

USC's old coach, Lou Holtz, coached at W&M in the 60's, as did Marv Levy, and Dan Henning.

Enough about W&M!

Let's talk about USC again on this thread.

just curious about the place..I never hear it discussed here in suburban NY.
by the way I was just at a local Japanese restaurant and loads of parents were talking about acceptances/denials,U Pittsburgh,Penn State, Wisconsin and more were all mentioned.

Well I'm joining this thread because a family member, who applied to U of SC because I recommended it (sight unseen, just from what I've heard of the school, and from what I know of her), and was accepted a month or so ago. She got into a couple of other places, and told me that U of SC is pretty far down her list.

But she's had second thoughts, and she just called me to say that she's decided to attend U of SC ! She's all excited, Gamecock this and Gamecock that. I'm so happy for her. She's been so full of stress about the whole college process, and it's nice to see her decided on a college that she wants, which wants her too.

Good luck to each of you, and whatever your second thoughts, may your last ones work out for you ! :)

p.s. - thanks to cathymee, thumper, and all the rest of you who helped with your thoughtful posts !

cathymee,
I was just reading parts your post to my S about Late Night Carolina. His reply: "Free food?? Yes!!You know that's going to draw a crowd!" He's getting really excited about USC! Is the Late Night Carolina something held on a regular basis for students?

Just a thought here...and remember our DD did not in the end choose USC. DH and I were talking with some friends recently about college choices (they have HS age kids). We told them about USC and both of us agreed, we would have been as happy with that as a college choice as the place where DD matriculated. And btw...I agree about "fit". As mentioned above, DD would not have applied to W and M if they had offered her a full free ride. She just didn't like the place or the town. However, she loved USC. Different strokes for different folks.

thumper - I love the way that you are still a big supporter of USC even though your D chose elsewhere. You are a class act! I'm glad she is happy where she ended up, but we would have loved having you guys at SC as well. LOL
I'm glad you still "visit" us on CC.

Hayden - SC started as 3rd on my d's list of 4 ( 4th was our state school which I MADE her apply to ) and slowly moved up. She is very happy with her choice now and says she knows it was the right choice for her. It is funny how things change throughout the process.
Good luck to all who are choosing this year - go with your gut I say!

Speaking as a W&M alum, it was definitely nerd central. But, as we all know....NERDS RULE! lol, and they were really cool nerds.

BTW, everyone there was a nerd, except for me, of course!

Jubilee, congrats on your decision. My S has also sent in his deposit, Capstone scholar agreement and signed up to live in Capstone. Like you, he also got a McKissick award. We'll have to get the two of you together, we are from Vienna, just up I95! My S is also interested in music and was impressed with the music dept at USC. He is a trombone player and will continue in some sort of ensemble(although he is majoring in biology), he is also thinking about the marching band too! (Good excuse for mom to make a road trip...that is if I can score some tickets)
he will be taking his car down with him, so maybe you guys can carpool for trips home(hopefully you will want to come home for visits, but the extra curriculars at USC look very enticing...I want to go too!!!)
As a mom I am relieved that this decision is made, I never knew how stressful this was to become!!!

hayden
welcome to your family member!I'd love to know how or what changed her thought process about USC.Was it a visit?Money? If you'd like to share,I'd love to know.
Greenville: Late Night Carolina seems to happen a few times a semester..I know there was one right away in the Fall semester, and they are always on Fridays.I think its to offer an alternative to a party setting.
As far as the free food, its out there alot..it gets the kids to attend events, like the yo-yo record breaking event last week, there was free food and music there too. Every Wednesdayafternoon, there's events outside (or inside if rain) in the plaza in front of the Russell House. They usually involve music,or other entertainment, food and a silly activity of some kind.
Tell your S is search for Carolina Productions on the USC website.Thats the organization that brings entertainment to campus and he can get an idea of whats happening or what has happened on there.
Next week, S is seeing Mo Rocca for free, hes a comedian who used to be on the Daily Show, and then there's a concert for 5$ featuring Gym Class Heroes (? to me but S has seen them before on Warped Tour and was excited) and Lupe Fiasco (? to me to, but he's apparently hot right now).
S will be able to tell anyone how to scope out the free food..hes an expert LOL.

BBVienna
we cross posted.Welcome to your S !! and I'm so glad he's happy with his decision.
If he's interested in a garage parking spot for his car, he'll have to get into a lottery. Its more expensive than a parking lot pass.Tell him to file as soon as they open it up..he applies through the VIP website.

He definitely wants a garage parking space! Do you know when the lottery opens up...silly me I'll check with VIP! Cathymee and PA mom, I can't tell you enough how much your postings have helped me know that we have made the right decision, Being from OOS makes you sometimes feel disconnected, but you and the enitre USC community(I love the mail we get almost every other day...we don't get anything from the other schools S has been accepted to, USC does a great job with keeping intouch with its prospective students and families)
On a side note, my extended family is excited beyond belief that S will be going to a SEC school. I have cousins that are season tickets holders at UT and another set that are season ticket holders at Arkansas...makes for good family rivalry!!!

cathymee, thanks! Since you ask, and since others may have the same question, I want to give you the full story: First, she's out of state, but the phone banks of USC students are relentless, and they are the nicest kids. They keep calling and telling her what a great place it is, so it made it impossible to just write the school off and forget it, even when it was at the bottom of her list.

Second, they gave her a scholarship and in-state tuition, so it became less expensive than our own state tuition. And money was definitely a factor.

Third, she wants to major in business, and she loves travel. So when I shared with her last week that USC's business program is so well regarded, and that it is so strong in international business, it surprised her into seeing USC in a totally different light.

Fourth - and rather amusingly ! - a bunch of kids at her school got rejected from South Carolina. So that appeared to raise the desirability quotient. (Oh, to be that young again.) She also decided she wanted a place that had some sports and team spirit. The other schools she got accepted to had a lot less of that. She had one other school that was still a top choice, but she got waitlisted there. She decided she didn't want to deal with a waitlist, so voila, she suddenly (to me, anyway) decided on USC. And there you have it. I'm still a bit concerned that she didn't give James Madison a full look, but so long as she seems so happy, I'm keeping those thoughts to myself !!

Hayden - I attended JMU back in the stone age and my d is currently at USC.I loved JMU and still talk it up to friends whose kids are looking. One of the big advantages that I see at USC is that there is more to do in Columbia. Though the Shenandoah Valley is beautiful and outdoor activities are great, Harrisonburg does not have as much to offer. We have stopped by a few times when passing through the area in the last few years ( I have a good friend in Charlottesville) and though the school and the area has grown since I was there, it still does not have as many choices as Columbia. JMO!

Congratulations to all that have made a decision - that's a hurdle that you are over now. Relax , enjoy the rest of senior year, and look forward to all of the positive aspects of life as a Gamecock!
