sad day :(

so, I got my scholarship letter today...only 7500/year. anyone else a bit disappointed with SMU scholarships?

I got the same amount. Thats the best one they offer besides the really exclusive half/full tuition scholarships.

well thats extremely disappointing. SMU is one of my top schools, but I'm not willing to take out $30,000/year in loans to pay for it. oh well, I applied for the Hunt Leadership Scholarship and I'm doing some outside scholarships and I'll probably get federal aid so maybe that will make it more affordable.

Yeah...I got 7500/year too, I mean I'm happy to get a scholarship, but it seems like nothing compared to the 21,000/year Providence sent me last week. I think with a Boston College acceptance and an almost full scholarship at Providence, SMU is pretty far down my list lol

Gee. You'd think a 2350 SAT, National Merit Finalist and a 4.2 avg would have merited more than $7,500 a year.
Did we get the old bait-and-switch trick?
Doesn't SMU realize that it's not Harvard-on-the-Plains?
And they had the nerve to send the token scholarship certificate in a faux leather binder.

...i was excited to just get the 7500...THANKS A LOT GUYS!

I'm not sure but I definately got $16500/year at Hendrix(the school I will be attending). SMU fin aid = the suck.

I think we're supposed to feel grateful that we were accepted into such a fine school.

I got the $7,500 scholarship, too, and I'm a national merit finalist (2330 SAT).
This is more than $20K less than any other scholarship offer I've received.
How do you go about informing a school that you're disappointed at their scholarship offer and scratching them from your list?
I'm sure we'll get painted by some as 'ungrateful punks' for turning up our noses at SMU's $7,500, but I find their offer to be unjustifiably arrogant. I'm basing that on the scholarship offers I've received from other schools.
The sad thing is that I would really have considered SMU if it was somehow affordable. Now I hate the school.

Apparently, notification of larger scholarships and dept scholarships comes sometime after notification of acceptance and smaller scholarships. If this is the case, don't despair. Looking at the stats on this page, there is still hope for more money for some of you. Good Luck.

That's life, get used to it.

SMU is a nice school to go to, but I've known a handful of SMU graduates and they didn't seem to have an upper hand over, say, UT Austin graduates, so yeah, I don't see any point of spending $30,000 a year at SMU.

I am actually quite appalled at the egotistical responses. Honestly, you apply to a school because you love the school, not because you are expecting over 7500 in scholarships. Also, your applications were obviously not as great as you make them sound. I had a 3.4 gpa, 2010 SAT, captain of the dive team-- not being recruited though, and I received the 7500 you received + 2500 from the rotunda scholars program, chosen by alums-- and I live in VA with only 1 girl from my HS there. I am disappointed that you would say that getting a letter saying that you received 7500/year in scholarships was a "sad" day!!!

tjd -- have some heart. Some people need a lot more than a 7,500 scholarshihp to make SMU even remotely affordable. Even if you love the school, you don't want to pay back loans for 20 years.

uzbek21 and shoe66: you both state that you are NM finalists. According to the SMU website NMF Scholars receive

"A minimum of half tuition plus $2,000 (inclusive of all SMU merit-based scholarships and tuition benefits, corporate sources, and need-based grants), not to exceed the total of SMU tuition and fees, renewable through four years".

That is at least $17K/year. What happened?

to shoe66.

I got a lower SAT than you. NMF as well. and a 4.4 gpa from a competitive public school in TX.

I received their full-ride scholarship.

Maybe you had to show them things beyond statistics.

I didn't expect to get ANYTHING! and i ended up getting a SMU distinguished scholar award and a Rotunda Scholar award. The first was $30,000 and the second was $2,500. Does anyone know what a Rotunda Scholar even is? I can't find ANY info on it.

Maybe they are looking to see beyond the scores.

My S got the Rotunda also in addition to another scholarship. I don't know who sponsors it either. May I ask which scholarship the $30,000 came under? That's a very nice award.

ag09081, did you maybe mean $7500 a year ($30,000 over four years) and then $2500 a year? Or did you get a $30,000 for a year followed by $2500 a year?

Did the decrease in scholarship deter most of you from choosing smu as your school?

Wow, I thought I had really good stats and I have heard nothing from them in regards to scholarships. I was really considering this school but will have to put at the bottom of the pile and really consider the schools that gave me some money.
