Sad Mail

Today my S received an application packet from Tulane. Normally, I would have been very excited about it. On the front of the envelope it says, no application fee, no essay, automatic scholarship consideration and a quick admission decision.

I am overwhelmed with sadness thinking about the current freshman at Tulane, the excitement that they felt and now the horrible reality of the situation.

Deb, we received a similar packet during last fall's hurricane evacuation. I made a crack at the time about no one going to school in such a location, but today my dd is a Tulane freshman. We have encountered only the most wonderful people connected with Tulane through the entire process, and by next year at this time they will be an even more incredible group of people. I am 100% confident that Tulkane and NOLA will prevail, and I hope your dd applies.

Good for you, geena!

During his stay in Jackson, my son collected a full page, front and back, of names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of students who, like himself, volunteered to return to Tulane at the first moment they could be housed and fed to work ten hours every day to help clean up and put the place back together.

Is that the kind of people you want your son to go to school with? Then maybe you shouldn't throw away that app package just yet.

I wouldn't throw away that app package, in fact I will encourage my S to apply.

I never would have imagined that my S would receive this package from any school when he was a Freshman. He's come a long way and worked very hard. I am so proud of the progess that he has made. Normally a fast track application would delight and be a happy day at our house. I am still very happy for my S. It's very exciting for him to receive these type of applications and invitations Honors Day events.

I just felt sadness for the situation in NOLA and the people affected. It's very hard to start school and to have a disaster affect it and also those who live in the storms path, it's very sad.
