Sad, sad SAT scores

-What would you all say about someone who got (on the old SATs) a 950 and took them again and got a 960?-

-I'd say "consistent scores" and nothing more.-

Thanks. So it's consistently bad? According to this site (not you though), I won't get in too many schools - at least not good ones - and I probably won't have good grades in college or success in life.

"Conversely...
15% (229K) scored < 400 Verbal
15% (204K) scored < 400 Math"

Thank you for posting this.

"And I know a couple of applicants who will not be getting into their school of choice due to lack of maturity & arrogance. They think they will get in because they have high SAT scores and make fun of anyone who scores less than a 1500 (math & verbal). But their real personalities have already shown themselves and their gc recs and teacher recs will be poor. This is exactly the type of student Ivies DON'T want - high SATs or not. There is a thing called emotional IQ and without it, you cannot succeed even with high SAT scores. But don't take my word for it - wait until your letters come in."

I like this.

"man... I only scored a 38000 on my SAT in 2nd grade. Do you think colleges will understand that I just couldn't do as well that day because I was like mega sick with the chicken pox? Man I like won't even get into my state U!!!"

LOL

"So, my SAT score is worthless and reflective of nothing? I'm not better off with it than some dude who got a 900? Alright, then."

Not worthless but you're not necessarily better than some "dude" who got a 900. i have been told it's what you do with college while you're in there and after you graduate.

-I think the reason SAT scores do not predict success in the real world is that they don't measure creativity, ambition, hard work, and probably the most important thing - personality. You can be smart, but that doesn't mean you can "sell" yourself to an employer, "sell" an idea, whatever. It also doesn't measure creativity at all.-

Excellent response. And so true. And often the attitude that "I am better than you are" can be given in an interview with a potential employer and that doesn't get the person a job.

-That's just ridiculous. The human brain certainly does not have an "SAT test taking component." SAT scores are a result of intelligence, logic, verbal reasoning abilities, and other skills. Sure, there are smart people who get poor scores. But there are far fewer stupid people who get good scores.-

So what do you, Cavalier, think of someone who scored a 950 on the old SAT and a 960 after taking it again?

-There are plenty of kids out there who do extremely well in school because they have a great memory, but I can 110% assure you that they will not get over a 1800 on the new SAT. Why? Because they don't have any logic, don't have ANY imagination, and don't do any extracurricular reading.-

This is horrible. That is not the reason some get a score lower than 1800 on the new SAT. Not at all.

-Be Nice to People on the Way Up; You'll Meet the Same People on the Way Down-

Orange Blossom, this is so so true.

I agree with ocean70 because the SAT does not predict how someone is as a person or even intelligence. Unfortunately, colleges care for some reason.

Grades and personallity are the best bet for college success. No doubt about it.

-No, I feel no sympathy for those in the top 10 who got low sat scores. Means they went to an easy school, got easy classes, or had an easy school class to compare to. Shows how UT is getting too many stupid people from the top 10% rule. Shows how competitive students in competitive city public schools (like me) will go to out of state schools since I know I can't make UT business (top 4% or higher).-

So you are saying someone in the top 5% of their class who scores below average on the SAT is actually really stupid and just had an easy school? Hmmm.

Thanks, Penn State. And I don't know why colleges care either.

My friend got a 1520...and he has a 4.0 UW GPA (asian)...He's not naturally smart so the SAT's were a struggle...he works hard in school which is why he has a 4.0, but not a good test taker. He retook it twice and highest he got was a 1720...he's not trying anymore.

Colleges care about SAT scores because it measures the potential you have to learn new material. If you're valedictorian in your school but your score is in the 1600s, they will wonder about grade inflation and whether teachers are grading too easy. They will question how much you'll have to struggle to grasp college leveled education.

So you think someone in the top 5% of their class but with less than average or about average SAT scores probably can't grasp college and must have had their grades inflated?

IDK..my school is competitive and the curriculum is no joke...and its not like he takes easy classes - he takes AP / honors classes

I know a guy who scored 800 combined a couple of years ago. He is at a very credible small liberal arts college. Remember, it's easier for guys than for girls to get into liberal arts colleges.

ocean70 stop octuple posting! Just edit your posts or just write all that stuff the first time.

The SATs are important because every high school in the country (and world) is different, and a standard measure must be used (like the SAT) to gauge how well a student can do.
A person with high GPA but low SAT is by no means stupid. What it means is that their high school has not adequately equipped them with the knowledge/reasoning skills tested on the SAT. If they went to a better high school, their GPA would be high but not as high, and they'd probably do better on the SATs as well.

After reading some of these posts, I just have to sit back and laugh. Some people on this site are wayyy into their scores, and being way to hard on themselves. If you get lower then an 1800, that doesnt put you in a bad category. an 1800 on the SAT is very solid, it can HELP get you into a lot of good colleges. Its just that everyone on this site is above 2000, and its irritating. I for one got a 1670 on my SAT, and I dont feel that Im stupid, I just feel I didnt perform amazingly on the SAT. The SAT doesnt show how smart/stupid you are at all either. Yes, many smart students who get good grades score high on the SAT, but there are also high GPA students who dont, and vice versa.

Basically what Im saying is, people have different opinions. Youre not gonna reach an agreement upon which test score should be the limit of stupidity, because its all opinionated. People are really getting off track too in this thread, lol. It started by just posting low scores (in your opinion) and it got to a debate like this. To me, if you get over 1000 SAT M/V, you did alright, and you should just be thankful for what you have (a working brain). It doesnt mean your stupid if you score a 1050, but like I said, you just didnt do well on the test. It happens.
