Safety Around Brown + Opinion of Brown

First time posting here and I’m a senior in highschool very interested in applying to brown. I’ve always lived in a pretty safe neighborhood about 20 minutes from downtown chicago. I was wondering just how are the surroundings around the school as well as the safety level to any of the people who actually attend the school or live in the nearby area.

Also to any current students at Brown, what is your opinion of the school? Any likes/dislikes? That would really help me learn a bit more about the school thank you!

I’m at Brown for the next couple of days, and I love the area! It’s a small, cultural, safe city, and Brown is detached from the hub of it all on College Hill which is semi-residential. It’s just really nice, with a very cool vibe around the place. Very pretty and college-y.

Brown is safe, if you make sure to be smart (not walk alone down dark streets at 2 am, etc). ir’s a mix of an urban / residential campus.

brown has benefits and drawbacks like all schools. over all i like it. do you have any specific questions?

“Brown is safe, if you make sure to be smart (not walk alone down dark streets at 2 am, etc).”

is there any ivy (or really any school besides maybe some LACs) where this isn’t the case?

I’ve only been at Brown for two months, but I’ve never felt unsafe despite the fact that I walk around alone at night quite frequently. There are services like SafeRide (a looping late-night shuttle) and SafeWalk (paid Brown students wearing bright vests that walk around at night and offer to escort you to your destination) that provide latenight transportation assistance if you feel that you really can’t walk alone. Brown University police are also surprisingly common / on top of their game.

As for Brown in general, I love it. Come here. You won’t regret it :)

Yes Brown is my top choice next to U of C. I’m sending my application today alongside my art portfolio ( I know the portfolio will probably have little affect but you never know right?). Right now since the weather is so cold I cant go visit it but I want to go in a couple months when there isn’t so much snow around. I’m already used to the cold though living 17 years in Chicago. What are your favorite things about Brown or the surrounding area?

Use the search function and you will find multiple threads answering your question.

Good luck privera! I read your post, read post #2 and thought: Whoa!

Then I saw the date… :frowning:

Ivy, we miss you here!
