A guy I worked with was from Providence and he told me not to apply to Brown because crime is outrageous in South Providence. He also said that gangs run the area around the school and that I wouldn’t be able to walk through the city by myself. I know the guy smoked pot daily so is there any validity to this?

No.................

Ummmm....NOOOOOO....I coach boys' and girls' tennis for a local "bad" school EXTREMELY close to Brown and I'm alive and well. I don't see any problems and I go there practically everyday...

That's ridiculous. South Providence has its bad neighborhoods, but there are definitely no gangs running around Brown. You can walk around the East Side (where Brown is) and downtown by yourself, and around the "bad" neighborhoods during the day. This guy has no idea what he's talking about.

To reiterate, Brown is NOT in South Providence...

A couple of people have been mugged, but these are few and far between, and not on campus. Brown's campus is extremely safe, walking anywhere in the daytime is safe, and usually pretty far into the night as well. I was wary of walking from the train station to campus alone once, but it was 1 am. You just have to be sensible.

since when have gangs run the area around brown's campus?

How does brown's safety issue compare with Harvard's or Cornell's?

Cambridge is said to be uber safe and Cornell is in the middle of nowhere so I suppose security is tight.

there's another thread on this about 5 lines down ahem

providence is a city and crime exists but security on campus is very good and the crime is much less compared to other college towns (new haven, cambridge, etc.)
