safety at CWRU?

Hi,
i'm a current senior who was recently admitted to CWRU and i'm a bit concerned about the crime in Cleveland. I live in a small suburb in Southern California that is not very used to crime and i'm a little scared for my safety if i go to CWRU. I'm really considering the school because it's exactly what i'm looking for, but am wondering if there will be an issue walking around campus alone.

Is crime evident on campus or is it just in the surrounding city? How often does it occur on campus?

How safe would you say it is, on a scale from 1 (being super safe and nothing to worry about) to 10 (you should carry a taser and use the buddy system no matter what)?

Case is situated right in the middle of East Cleveland, which isn’t the safest place in the world. However, with the hospital on campus, as well as with campus police, East Cleveland police, and the greater Cleveland police force, I (as a 18 year old female) feel safe. Granted, I don’t walk around alone in the dark, but you just have to be smart. Ride Greenies (the campus shuttle), or call SafeRide or a police escort if you don’t feel safe, or walk in a group. Cleveland is a city like all others-- use your head and you’ll be safe. I would rate it a 7 or an 8, but any city school is like that. I am from the suburbs but very close to the Drexel/Penn West Philadelphia campus, and it is the same situation. You just have to be smart!

Jkrtist - can you comment on different times of night? My impression was that a routine walk to dorm from library at 8 or 10 pm should be fine, vs 2 or 3 AM when you might want to call for an escort.

That’s about right. I mean, at 10 pm I would walk with friends (as a girl I feel more comfortable not walking alone), but its personal preference. Some nights people are walking around that late, some nights no one is really around!

During my two day visit with my D to the campus, I thought it was safe. More than anything else I saw the way the Police interacted with the students which made me very comfortable as a dad to send my daughter to Case. Convincing mom is a whole different story. :)

@jkrtist and others: Case is not located in East Cleveland. However, East Cleveland is a first-ring suburb that borders the area of University Circle (where Case is located) and is to the east/northeast of Case’s area. University Circle was just named one of the 10 prettiest places in the country:

[Forbes names University Circle one of most beautiful places in US](http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland_metro/forbes-names-university-circle-one-of-most-beautiful-places-in-us)

As an alum of CWRU grad school, 20+ year resident of the region and with a child planning on attending in the fall, I appreciate the concern for safety but I would caution against overhyping as being anything beyond what any other urban setting might require in terms of watching oneself. Rules about staying safe apply in University Circle as much as anywhere else and if anything, because of this perception, all the folks involved in keeping the area welcoming and safe work as hard if not harder to make good on that desire.

Best wishes to everyone who decides to come to CWRU. Just use the same care you would if you were in most other urban settings.

My child visited Case Western recently, so I decided to search on the Internet about safety at Case, given its location. The site gave it a “D”, I believe, so I was alarmed, until I saw that most elite universities had gotten an “F”. Face it, most universities are situated in the older part of town, areas deserted en masse by middle and upper middle class folks.

Case seemed to be fine for an urban campus when we visited for a full day and evening. There’s a website called spot crime that lists the types of crime for any location… be sure to compare it to other colleges. There appears to be some level of theft at almost every college.

Here’s the url address–

http://spotcrime.com/case%20western#41.505338%2C%20-81.60733

You’re mostly going to be dealing with petty theft (bikes, laptops, etc). There will be the occasional mugging, but it’s almost always on the very edge of the campus early in the morning (2-3AM). If you use common sense and don’t wander around the edge of campus around 3AM, you will be fine.

Speaking as a lifelong Cleveland resident (Though, granted, in the suburbs), I can say that University Circle is one of the safer areas of Cleveland itself. Yes, it’s near East Cleveland - but it’s also near the downtown area, which is as safe as any city by and large, and many other very safe neighborhoods. There’s no reason you’d actually need to go into East Cleveland (though you might choose to drive through a portion of it to get downtown, but main roads are generally safe anyway) from Case, and you are perfectly safe in and around University Circle. Frankly, the areas you’ll be in are as safe/unsafe as any major city - you are at no higher risk than you would be in a comparably urban campus anywhere else.
