I've just been accepted to Rutgers Newark and am considering my choices for colleges. Rutgers has a great reputation for its education. However, I am concerned that the college is located in a dangerous city.

Can anyone provide some incite as to how campus security/ safety is at Rutgers Newark?

Never seen the campus, but Newark isn’t the best area like you said. I’ve actually gotten mugged there. I’m from NJ, so I’m not just going off “what I’ve heard” I’m basing my opinion on personal experience. That being said, no city is completely safe, you should check it out for yourself and see how you like it. You should feel comfortable on your University’s campus.

Rutgers-Newark is located next to some very rough areas of Newark. I can’t comment on current campus security, as I got my graduate degree from there in 1989 and the campus has expanded significantly since that time.

I also got my graduate degree there, in 1990. Back then, if you stayed on campus, you were generally OK. Even a block or 2 off campus (we used to go to some local eateries, nail salons, bars, etc) was relatively safe. I don’t know how far that safety zone extends now, however. Regardless, you still need to be vigilant, as muggings and car break-ins do occur, even in the university-owned parking garage. On the other hand, Newark does have a lot to offer–NJPAC performing arts center for theater and concerts, The Rock (Prudential Center) for sporting events and concerts, and the Newark Bears minor league baseball. And access to NYC is very easy.
