Safety Liberal Arts Schools

Hi! I am a junior looking for some safety schools. I am grateful that cost is not an issue, but Naviance has unfortunately not been that helpful, as many of the schools on my list so far are small and thus don’t have very many data points.

I have a 32 ACT and a 3.8 UW GPA out of 4.0 at the end of sophomore year (this is expected to go up a little as my grades have improved this year). I also have a multitude of varied extracurriculars. I’m probably going to do an English/Journalism/Communications major (or something or that realm) and a Music minor.

ED: Hamilton College (top choice)
EA: Northeastern, Binghamton
RD: Lafayette, Franklin & Marshall, Bucknell, Skidmore, NYU, Bates, Union, Emerson, Tufts, University of Rochester

Out of this list, are there any that would qualify as safety schools? If not, which safeties should I add to my list? I want to stay in the Northeast. Thanks so much!

What can your family afford? Part of being a safety is affordability? Off hand I would add Bard if you can afford it.

Some LAC ideas might be Muhlenberg and Siena (Siena has a fast turnaround for decisions which is nice). Dickinson may be exploring as well. Fairfield and Fordham are both smaller universities which have EA options. Keep in mind that “demonstrated interest” may be a factor for some of these schools so check the common data set for each and find out.

For full disclosure my D is at Lafayette and loves it.

@“Erin’s Dad” cost is luckily not a factor in my college decision! Bard is actually only about 45 minutes from me, so I should definitely tour!

@happy1 Thanks for your input, I’ll definitely look into that list! My dad actually went to Lafayette, so I have an interview scheduled for Alumni Children’s Weekend at the end of April!

Hampshire has a ED rate of 81% - I really don’t see why you wouldn’t get in unless you have some disciplinary issue…

That being said if you plan to pursue Journalism after graduation then Emerson would be a good choice if you like living in a city.

Skidmore, Lafayette, Union, Emerson and F&M seem like very realistic choices with your stats.
You could also look at Trinity. But it seems like you already have a lot of matches or schools bordering on safeties, so why not add some more reach schools ie; Colby, Colgate

Other Northeast LACs not already mentioned that could be safe for you- St Lawrence, Allegheny, Gettysburg, Clark

Look at the “colleges that change lives,” excellent schools with high acceptance rates.

Check out Gettysburg and Richmond/Wash & Lee, although the latter 2 would be more of a match than a safety.
Is DC okay? Check out American U and Catholic U.

Ithaca for Communications

Also, you are a year and a half away from actually applying. Think of it as shoe shopping: it is great to look around, get to know what’s out there, try on different styles to see what suits you, etc. However, your feet are still growing, so don’t get too fixated now on your final choice. You should grow and change a fair bit over the next 18 months (it would not be good if you didn’t!). Your list looks fine, but be prepared to be flexible and allow for changes in your priorities.

@collegemom3717 Thanks for that comment, I never really thought about it that way. I guess I’m just really excited and impatient

I second Ithaca College for communications as a good safety, and if you don’t mind large schools then maybe Syracuse as well

@Dolemite OP’s top choice is Hamilton (not Hampshire) which has an acceptance rate of around 27%

Level of applicant’s interest is very important at American. http://www.american.edu/provost/oira/upload/CDS_2014-2015-for-Publication.pdf Unless the OP can show the love it’s not a good option for a safety.

@“Erin’s Dad” is American right in DC or does it have a campus?

“you are a year and a half away from actually applying” (#11)

Did I miss something? The OP is a junior and may have less than ten months to complete her second round of applications (if needed).

It is at the NW edge of DC, in an area that looks almost suburban. GW is full-on in and of DC; Georgetown is a mostly contained campus in Georgetown, but porous with the Georgetown.

@collegemom3717 thanks for the info!
