Safety List ? - International student

Hi !,

I am an international student with a SAT score of 2000 ( 650/720/630 ) , I have applied to Cornell ED Engineering ( Computer Science ) . My class rank is top 10 % and gpa is pretty good as well . I need some safety colleges that have a strong computer science program . I do not require financial aid . Should I apply to UC Berkeley/ UCLA with these stats ??

Thank You !

I’m not sure how it works for International students but I’m pretty sure neither UCB nor UCLA are safeties.

I am not referring to UC-B as a safety, I am just asking if I should apply there with my Stats ?

Thanks for replying !

UCB and UCLA would be reaches. You do have a chance with good enough essays, recs, and ECs, but it would be an uphill battle.

Thank You For replying.

I understand that UC’s will be reaches, but I am applying anyway .

Can you please list some safety uni’s that have a strong computer science program ?

None of these are “safeties”, but all have strong computer science programs and admit more students than the programs already on your list:
University of Washington
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Purdue
University of California, San Diego.

The University of California system is in serious financial trouble and dramatically increased acceptances for international students last year, so you may find that your chances at all UC schools are improved.

As the above user mentioned, int’l students have increased dramatically at all the UCs. Even then, your low SAT scores will hold you back.

You can even apply to all the UCs which will save a lot of energy and time.

Any off-beat colleges you can tell me about where competition for int’l students is lower ?

Thanks !

Generally speaking, admissions is more difficult for international applicants even if they are full-pay. This means that what would be an academic safety if you were a US applicant will be more of a match, what would be a match if you were a US applicant will be a reach, and of course a reach for a US applicant will be a super-reach. The only flat-out safeties here for international students are those few institutions that admit solely on the numbers and also extend that policy to include internationals.

Even though you can pay your own way, you might take a look at the places discussed in this thread. Most admit by formula http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships.html</a> So to the public universities in Iowa. Check their websites to see if they could work for you.

Not really a safety, but Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) should be on your list.

Georgia Tech (Georgia Institute of Technology) is likely to admit you.

CMU is on my list

The UCs are looking for qualified, non-resident, full tuition paying students in order to alleviate some budget concerns.

Hmm… Thank You CMU will be on my list . Any more colleges you guys can tell me about ?, I have applied ED to Cornell, any news on the number of applicants this year ? Also, what do you think, are my chances ? I am just curious .

Please list some safeties and mid-reaches for me .

Appreciated !

Give Ohio State a try, you may even qualify for the International Scholarship!! :)

Criteria
The International Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to Columbus campus students. Those considered have ACT composite scores of 29 or higher or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1300 or higher.

Go Bucks!! :)

I would suggest looking for a safety school in your home country (if you live in the EU, any country counts). Admissions to US colleges have become entirely unpredictable. For internationals (me as well :)), the chances of admission+scholarship and any given university or college are rather slim. The more generous the college, the more applicants, the more prestigious the college, the more funding - start over again.
With your stats, your chances of admission to the international need-blind schools are not so great to non-existent. I would focus on colleges that have a low percentage of internationals and aim to achieve an “international profile” (maybe schools that are expanding their study abroad programs etc.) Those schools are more likely to accept you, and with your stats you have a decent chance of getting at least some financial aid.
Try to stand out when applying. Don’t read any CC tips. Just present yourself as the person you are and not what CC tells you the college wants, then you will be fine :)
