Safety majors

For those of you applied/accepted to impacted majors at top teir ucs are you able to apply to a safety major? please post both the impacted major and the safety. Mine are impacted:economics or safety: computer science im interested in both, but would of course prefer business econ at LA lol :P

At UCLA, math economics is less selective than business economics.

Yes; I applied for mechanical, with aerospace as safety for UCSD; strangely enough they are both impacted–however, if denied for each of those majors i would have been changed to undeclared. Might be different for the other campuses though.

And yes, ucbalamnus I realize that econ is less selective. And math/econ isn’t impacted but I feel like it’s a bit of this and a bit of that. I put comp. sci. as a back up major because im interested in it more for Berkeley and its more of an example.

As a transfer to UCs you are only reviewed for your primary major that you select on your application the only way that they review you for both options is if you are a TAP student.

It is probably good preparation for graduate school in economics or professional degree programs in financial engineering.

UCLA will not consider your alternate major unless you are TAP certified. And if you are, they will only consider your alternate major if it is non-impacted, otherwise they will just ignore it.

Yeah, ill most likely be TAP certified as honors has a lot of benefits, and im looking forward to being slammed with work, ECs, and internships.

You will be able to list a major and an alternate separately for each school separately. Computer Science is a major with the school of Engineering for UCLA, so TAP won’t help you there. Buz Econ and Econ are in L&S, so you will be considered for an alternate if you list it and are in TAP. You must select a non-impacted major within L&S, however, so you would not be considered for your alternate if you put down CS or an impacted major within L&S (only for UCLA of course).

Yeah, I think it’s really interesting though how many differences in competitiveness there are. For example, computer science is in L&S in Berkeley but yet is considered an engineering major at UCLA. Although, I think ill be a competitive applicant for there with two internships (1 with UCSD NCMIR and 1 with NASA Ames…hopefully) & etc. I couldn’t actually care less if I wound up at UCLA as opposed to uc Berkeley. I just am really excited about internship and academic plans that I have! Thank you for your help :)

You’re welcome. :)

You can always switch majors at Orientation once you get into UCLA so long as you have most of the pre-reqs for that major done.

Yeah, but im pretty sure you can’t do that with impacted majors i.e. economics. But at this stage my i.terests are strong yet capricious; I know I want to go into a field that is heavy in mathematics but also want to make money ergo ruling out pure mathematics.
