<p>Ok. I'm planning to transfer to UCLA for Fall 2015. However, I need to choose between the three majors above. If I choose Buz econ and econ ( impacted majors), I will able to finish all the requirements by Spring 2015. If I choose Math- Econ, I will definitely miss out Linear Algebra and a CSIS course.The reason why I look at Math- Econ major is because it is not impacted at UCLA. Transfer students will get up to 50 % chance to be admitted to that major comparing to 18 % to the other two ( according to UCLA profile of admitted transfer students 2013). I don't know what I should do. What is your opinion ?</p>
<p>stay at CC an extra year to complete TAP along with LA/DE + the programing class for Math/Econ. Also beef up your ECs with some school related stuff like tutoring and you’ll have a good chance of getting in. </p>
<p>If you think you will enjoy Math Econ as much as the others, I say go for that major. Get yourself the best chance of getting in.</p>
<p>Let me try giving you an alternate way to weight your decision, I applied to Math/econ because I had a low GPA (3.3) and know I had a slim chance to get a econ or biz econ. I truly enjoyed math/econ. I had the opportunity to switch to the econ major (once at UCLA) and turned it down because I like math/econ more, because of the upper-division math requirements it would be easier to switch from math/econ to econ then vice-versa…</p>
<p>one more point… since math/econ is not really impacted you have a chance of getting admitted even if you are missing prerequisites. however, it would be unlikely for you to graduate in 2 years</p>
<p>so the real question becomes:
- spend 1 more year at CCC + 3 years at UCLA
- spend 2 more years at CCC + 2 years at UCLA.</p>
<p>either way it would looks like you would be a class 2018 for math/econ</p>
<p>@bomerr my school doesn’t tag with UCLA ( it’s in San Diego area). I am a math/stat tutor right now.I don’t really think of taking DE/LA because the other schools ( Berkley and SD) don’t require for econ major. The only reason I look at Math/ Econ is because I know I would have a higher chance to get in UCLA but not because I like it more. I’m good at math but I enjoy econ and financial accounting more :)</p>
<p>@2016Candles I really like business and econ more than math so that is the dilemma.</p>
<p>@Dagoberto oh thank you for the inside information. I really wanna go to a business or econ graduate school so I’m sure that econ/math would be a good major. Anw, thank you for telling me !!!</p>
<p>@boy561
I got rejected from UCLA Biz-econ with a 3.8 GPA and no Tap. that’s why I would recommend doing what I said. </p>
<p>@boy561 If you are considering getting a Phd in Economics then majoring in Economics would be a big mistake. Economic undergrad major does not prepare you enough (quantitative) for top Econ Phd programs. The reason that Math/Econ degree was created at UCLA is to prepare students for top Econ Phd programs. The Econ department at UCLA has a special program that allows you to earn your Bachelor’s and Master’s simultaneously.
<a href=“http://www.econ.ucla.edu/undergraduate/?p=scholars”>http://www.econ.ucla.edu/undergraduate/?p=scholars</a></p>
<p>Is for people that are really bright and want to attend top Phd programs…</p>
<p>Disregard most of what I said if you dont want a Phd. I did not even attempt the program because I have no interest in pursuing either a Math or Econ Phd (ain’t nobody got time for that). If you want to get your MBA then you have more flexibility in choosing your undergrad major.</p>
I have a 3.5 GPA and I am wondering do I have a chance of getting accepted for Math/Econ?
What if I didn’t finish the pre-reqs?
@TonyStark93 have you looked at last year’s profile of admitted students for your major? Take a look at the link below and roam around CC to get some better ideas. how many prereqs are you missing? you can’t finish by spring?
https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm
are you just not taking them or are they not offered?
@fncrane @chr1st1
I am gonna be missing calculus 3, programming class, and Linear algebra…
So I will be missing 3 classes.
I have everything else though, english, calc 1-2 (calc2 im taking this spring 2015 semester), and econ classes.
That’s why I am a bit worried. Plus my GPA (3.5) seems quite low…
Good luck to you. I didn’t apply to that major because I’m also taking calc 2 in the spring and was worried about the prereqs however admissions into that major aren’t as impacted as the biz econ major so who knows? How were the rest of your stats.
@chr1st1
I have tons of EC, Volunteer hours, etc. pretty good personal essay as well as a pretty crazy story.
I originally went to a CSU but had to leave due to terrible grades and medical problems within my family so I had to go from NorCal to SoCal back and forth alot. Ended up going to CC and raising my GPA up from like a 1.8 to 3.5
Do csus offer academic renewal? @TonyStark93
You should see if you’re eligible
what about discrete structures and differential equations?
I’m a transfer student at UCLA currently procrastinating on an accounting midterm that I have tomorrow at 7:40 AM, but I can tell you that for the Economics department, the major under which you apply doesn’t matter. To clarify, if you are admitted under Math/Econ but satisfy the requirements for Business Economics by the time you need to apply for the actual major (by which I mean you officially declare your major and are no longer in the pre-major, which I believe is spring quarter in the first year after you transfer), your major can be Business Economics.
I was admitted under Pre-Business Econ but my pre-major grades in UCLA’s courses last quarter are not high enough for me to be able to get into Business Econ, so I’m going to declare as normal Economics next quarter when I’ve finished the remaining requirements. Similarly, if I satisfied the math requirements for Math/Econ, I could declare as Math/Econ next quarter.
