They aren’t 100% locks, but he is quite likely to get into Towson University and George Mason. I’m sure you are already looking at the satellite campuses of Penn State – those will be true safeties for him.

Hi and thanks for the very interesting suggestions above.

I do know about the Penn State branch campuses, but to be honest I think they are considered to be way below the quality of main campus, and many lack on campus housing or are commuter colleges—so those are not really in the running. And I’d prefer something a step up from the quality of the PASSHE schools like IUP.

In all honesty now that I think about it, if it is much more expensive than in-state tuition for Temple there would have to be something about the school that makes the extra cost worth it.

Thinking about tuition only:

Temple U $12,500 (IS)
Towson U $19,000 (OOS)
George Mason $25,000 (OOS)
Duquesne $25,000
St Joes $35,000
Susquehanna $34,000
LaSalle $33,000

Immaculata will give merit aid to students with similar stats - a girl from my school applied last year with similar scores and received a full ride. Other Pennsylvania schools that might work: Geneva, Mercyhurst, Lycoming, Arcadia, Washington & Jefferson. They’re all private, but all the public Pennsylvania schools your daughter’s either already applying for or are part of the PASSHE school list.

So, are you saying that cost won’t be an issue if you feel the school is worth it? Do you have an upper limit for a budget? Such as…no more than $50k?

Anyway, there are OOS flagships that will accept your child.

What is his likely major?

I would suggest that he test again…and also take the ACT, since some do better on that. Get him some practice books.

Some suggestions…

UDayton
Saint Louis U
Loyola Chicago
DePaul
and some mid-tier state flagships

Thank you SLUMOM- WVU looks like a good safety to me - I checked the link you gave and there are merit scholarships that a student can qualify for based on GPA/SAT score- I see one that offers $4,000 per year for a student with a GPA of 3.25 and SAT of 1190- that would bring the cost very close to in state tuition for Temple.

WVU also seems to have a fun college atmosphere with good athletics teams. Its not too far a drive for us either. Thank you I think this addresses the safety school issue perfectly!
