The schools I am looking at currently as target/reach schools are: UNC Chapel Hill, William & Mary, UCSD, UCLA, and Duke(far reach). I am looking for research universities (specifically neuroscience major and math minor). I have a 1410 SAT and 31 ACT, and go to a school with no grades or GPA (but people consistently get into good schools). I would prefer a medium sized school not in the south.
What state are you from? Do you consider NC and VA to be southern? I guess I am confused as to why some of your current choices are southern, yet you don’t want to be in the south ( I say this not knowing your home state). How about the U of Rochester, Pitt, NC State, and Lehigh? What is your budget?
The schools that I suggested are not safeties ( not sure about NC State).
With your stats, UCLA is a reach as it is for most applicants. Safety schools might be any with >30% acceptance rate.
I live in NC but wouldn’t want to go any farther south, because my family and I are from the west coast. I don’t have a strict budget because of a college cost benefit I have through a parent’s work @twogirls
How far north will you go? UMD- College Park, SUNY Binghamton and SUNY Buffalo ( Buffalo would be a safety but may be too big) are a few more suggestions.
Well nice size and slightly in SC - Furman? Not a research univ but caters to undergrads.
The overwhelming majority of the nation’s four-year colleges are “safeties” for someone with your stats. My son had similar scores with a decent, but unspectacular GPA (3.3-3.4 UW/4.0+W), and outstanding extracurriculars. He got into UCSD, but not as a Science major. UNC-CH rejected him, but it was a huge reach, and he wasn’t a NC resident. I’d say that other UNC campuses (e.g. Asheville, Greensboro, Charlotte, et al) are safeties for you, if you’re willing to consider them. My son’s safeties were smaller colleges, which might not appeal to you: Eckerd (FL, so further south), and Guilford (in NC). If you want to go back to CA, other UC campuses ought to appeal to you. I’d say that Santa Cruz is a safety and Davis a match for you.
The UC’s will be at OOS prices: $60K per year. Does your benefit cover those amounts of $240K for 4 years?
@“aunt bea” yes it does
