Safety Schools for a kid who likes vibe of Swarthmore, Haverford. [3.7/34 for Humanities]

OP said kid “Leans towards lush, green suburban campuses surrounded by nature.”

This is decidedly NOT Clark’s environment. Worcester is urban and campus edges a gritty part of the city.

The campus is really nice and other aspects of the school might appeal.

I second @cinnamon1212 suggestions upthread—especially Hobart. And add me to the votes for a look at Conn College. I don’t think you mentioned gender, but males have a big edge in admission there.

Regarding relative difficulty of admission at Connecticut College, please note that it tends to accept male applicants at a lower rate (34% in a recent year) than female applicants (45% in the same recent year).

Interesting. Our guidance counselor has been telling families the opposite. She said Conn College has a poor male-female ratio (over 63% women) and they are trying to balance things out. She finds that male applicants from our high school have a higher acceptance rate than their female counterparts.

It is simultaneously possible for males to have a lower total acceptance rate AND an advantage in admissions if the male applicants to a school are weaker on average than female applicants. Guidance counselors may be deliberately steering weaker male candidates to gender-unbalanced LACs where they might have a better chance in admissions.

Yes, my post might have been better served if I’d included the point that acceptance rates are only prima facie indicators of difficulty of admission. Nonetheless, the magnitude of the gender discrepancy — female applicants are accepted to Connecticut College at a rate 32% greater than that for male applicants — seems to offer some information in and of itself.

UC Santa Cruz. Lush is an understatement. Humanities and Sciences are great to top-notch. Hardly any Greek life. Social justice is a 10.

Bigger school than most of the ones posted here, but the separation between the colleges within the school make it feel smaller. Easy and free bus ride into town. Out of state costs are high.

I was thinking Vassar as well!

Scanned quickly so apologies if this is redundant…

As the parent of a Swattie and a Ford, the one school that they both liked during the “building a list” process, which was “safer” in theory than Swat and Haverford was Lafayette. They both liked the vibe and had friends who attended Lafayette that confirmed they would have likely enjoyed their time there.

Easton is OK, but there is a lot of nature in the area, and buses to NYC and Philly if he decides to go to the city for a game or a concert, or a museum.

If you’re looking at true “safeties” in the Northeast (acceptance rates over 50%), you’re looking at SLACs like Muhlenberg, Gettysburg, Wheaton in MA (just visited there…beautiful campus, great programs, financially healthy, 80% acceptance rate) Hobart & William Smith, and Drew. (There are some more.) Bard’s latest acceptance rate according to the admissions officer we spoke with was 48%.
