Hi! I am looking for some new ideas for safety schools. I am also applying to Boston College, Notre Dame, Fordham University, University of Georgia, and Washington University in St. Louis. Preferably, I would like to look at schools in the Northeast/New England/Midwest. My original idea for a safety school turned out to not be a very good option, so now I need ideas as soon as possible!! I would appreciate any suggestions that y’all have ~ thank you so much!!
Providence, Manhattan College, Siena College, U of Scranton, St. Michael’s, Muhlenberg, St. Bonaventure. In all these cases, if you are reasonablly qualified for ND, BC and Wash U, these would all result in very large merit awards. They are all very good schools as well.
Without knowing your stats, its difficult for anyone to recommend safety schools.
What’s your state school?
The University of Georgia is my state school. I have a 2010 SAT and 30 ACT.
A “safety” school is one where you are guaranteed admission and can afford; usually that is a public university in your home state, so for you, that means a public university in Georgia. With your stats, UGA certainly should not be a problem in terms of admission; are there issues with financing?
Also, what are you interested in studying?
@gonzalogirl ND, Wash U are very remote. BC a bit closer. Fordham is a good choice and Villanova and Loyola Maryland would have been.
I think the middle portion of your list is lacking.
Ohio Wesleyan University
St. Olaf College
U of Dayton
Beloit College
@gonzalogirl What was your original safety?
You have a good shot at Fordham and GA- the others on your list are reaches or for BC a high match.
Good safeties would be Providence, Fairfield, Marist, Hobart, SLU
You should add some more matches. If you like BC what about BU or Holy Cross?
Safeties have to be AFFORDABLE. How much will your family pay?
What is your M+CR SAT?
@Gandalf97 @mom2coIIegekids Money is not a factor in picking a school. I am not very interested in UGA because I would definitely prefer to be at a smaller school in the North.
@TurnerT @wisteria100 I am a legacy at Notre Dame and am hispanic, if that changes any perspectives. Assuming that BC is a reasonable match and Fordham is a pretty good shot, would you suggest schools such as Providence, Fairfield, Villanova, etc.?
For Notre Dame your SAT is barely above the 25%ile and your ACT is below it. Legacy is important while race is considered. IMO that’s a reach. Your scores are well above Providence’s 75%ile but the essay is very important. Look up the Common Data Set for each school, section C7, to see the weight items get in admissions.
I would agree that Fordham, Providence, Fairfield, Villanova woudl all be good places to apply. A notch less selective would be UScranton. Your state flagship would be a good choice as well.
@gonzalogirl Tough call on ND. How are you legacy? Parent? I think I would have created a core of schools like Villanova, Loyola, Lafayette, Fordham and Holy Cross. Getting rejected from all five is inconceivable to me with a 30 ACT.
With two safety schools like Providence and Scranton. I don’t care for Fairfield, not that it’s a bad school just that more kids at Providence and Scranton really want to be there. Plus at this level of school, nothing comes close to Scranton in terms of facilities, housing and food, many elite schools don’t either.
Oh good, so your parents have said that they’ll pay all costs for whatever school you want? Super!
Even though your stats are modest for ND, I do think you might have a good chance there. How are their diversity numbers for Hispanic students?
What do you want to major in?
Holy Cross would be a great option.
