Can someone please address safety at Tulane? Our D1 is considering - we are from the Midwest and this has come up several times from several people. Any thoughts would be helpful.

There have been a number of threads on this already:

This last links to other threads about the same topic. There has been a lot discussed already.

The bottom line is that Tulane is as safe as any other urban campus, and safer than many. Don’t let people’s ignorance about New Orleans and Tulane affect you.

You are from the midwest, so maybe this will help also. I am originally from St. Louis, and I know a lot about Wash U. I can’t tell you how many people brought up that St. Louis has so much crime, St. Louis is the murder capital, blah blah blah. If you know St. Louis at all the crime is almost all in Illinois (East St. Louis) and the north side of St. Louis itself. Wash U is miles from that and in an old money, very nice part of St. Louis. Reminds me of another place I have heard of. I will think of it in a minute. Sounds like a road I think. Oh right. Tulane. LOL. The parallels between those two schools is almost eerie. So relax and tell your D to enjoy her time there.

I’ll put it one more way, maybe the best argument I can make. My D had her choice of almost any school she wanted. I don’t care how loyal an alum I am (and I think all would agree I am pretty loyal!), if I thought that attending Tulane represented a risk to her well being beyond what life presents anyway, there is no way in hell she would be there.

interesting analogy! Ironically, Wash U. was her first choice and she was waitlisted there. We visited last April and did indeed feel very safe on campus. It seemed “practically perfect” in very way. She still hopes to be considered from the list. However, we need to make a decision by May 1st and Tulane is becoming an obvious choice. I am hoping she REALLY likes it because the merit package is quite appealing. We are visiting for DT in a few weeks - just wanted another opinion from a parent. I appreciate the wealth of knowledge you have shared via posts on this site, FC.

I visited Tulane, and if you take the streetcar down, you definitely notice that the area steadily becomes more affluent as you approach Tulane and Loyola.

President Cowen also noted in his speech that most of the incidents that occur at Tulane (and other college campus’) are rooted in the particular student’s behavior. If one is walking down the street at 3pm, not much is going to happen. If one is drunk, stumbling, and alone at 2am after a party, something is bound to happen.

No one can be assured safetty anywhere, truth be told. Perhaps the fact that TU drill safet into the students head from the ge-go is a good thing so that they are not complacant and they practice smart self-awareness. I also think that as they build more dorms on the Newcomb side of campus tjhe activity level, and hence safety with the increased ctivity, will be even better. Just a thought…

I’ve been reading the New Orleans newspapers for several months now, and it’s apparent that most of the violent crime that’s happening in New Orleans is gang and drug related–bad guys going after other bad guys.

Of course that’s true in any major city, but the NOLA.com website provides a handy link to Google Maps in every crime article, and if you point and click you see that most crime is happening miles from the Tulane campus.

One of my concerns was Audubon Park. You would think that the park would be an ideal spot to prey on college students, especially at night, but other than one rather hapless guy who spent a couple weekends wearing a raincoat and flashing the occasional passing female without much effect, the park seems remarkably safe.

Does anyone know details about these shootings last night?

Not yet. Still waiting to hear more about that and the shootings in Oklahoma. I can tell you one thing for sure. New Orleans is so dependent on visitors in that part of the city, they will be all over this. It may not be the most PC thing to say, but we all know that crime in certain areas is barely investigated, while in other areas it is quite the opposite.
