Sam Walton WalMart Scholarship

My son got the email and he won the $3000 scholarship too!! Yippee, I’m so excited and proud. Sorry, couldn’t help but brag…it’s the mom in me.

Son got this also! Thank God! He really needs it and I was beginning to wonder if anything was going to come through for him. Congrats to all winners!

I won!!! :d

So when do they pay it to the college? Should we notify our colleges that we won?

My DD got it too
This made it possible for her to go where she wants now!
Congrats to all the other winners

I was wrong! The email just came later for me! So excited to get this and Lowe’s!

So I have a question.

On the Scholarship Agreement Form for Finalists they have a graduation date blank, do they want college graduation? The blank is by all the college information, but I wasn’t totally sure.

Maybe this has been answered already but does winning this scholarship effectively lower your need based financial aid? I just won and haven’t agreed to the terms yet but I’m wondering what the point is of winning $3,000 if my need based financial aid will get lowered by some proportion to neutralize my award. Anyone have an answer for this? Is it just free money or does your FAFSA/Financial Award get readjusted after reporting this scholarship win?

^^ college graduation.

^ It depends on your college. Most of them that offer need-based reduce their grant based upon the scholarship amount. Unfortunate, but we can’t do anything about it.

Anyone know *when * will this be paid directly to the institution?

@JohnnyHoppy thanks! And I believe in their FAQs it stated that checks would be mailed to the institution starting August 1st and if they didn’t arrive within a month, we were to contact ACT or something. However, my college classes begin August 24th, so I’m hoping the money shows up before then. :)

Ah, got the email today. I have another full scholarship, but I still have to cover 5k in workstudy/summer contributions. Hoping this can make up for that as well as some local scholarships.

Does anyone know if we need to contact Wal-Mart to give them our college’s contact info.

Unfortunately no email for me. Congrats to all of you though :)

won this scholarship! yay!
and also the Coca-Cola Scholarship!
feeling very blessed!

I got the scholarship too! yay! how many people got it?

i got it too  … do you think that maybe i can convince them to pay for my summer classes instead of my fall classes? (im already covered for fall/spring classes, just not summer…)

Got It!!

Congrats to the other scholars!

hooray i got it! congrats to everyone!

@g0ld3n - I would definitely email the financial aid office at your school. I emailed mine and they said since I have nearly $15,000 in loans (stafford and parent plus), the scholarship will decrease the loans amount. They said at some point - after the loans (either just the parent plus, or maybe all of them) were completely covered by outside scholarships, they would decrease my need-based awards. I hope your college would do the same! :D

I got this yesterday!
