San Diego Restaurant recommendations

@Marilyn I have been to the Crack Shack on a previous visit - loved it! I would’ve taken our teens there this time but we’ve been on a healthy eating kick the last few months. I was trying to be as good as possible on this trip. Too much temptation there! I saved my indulgences for a breakfast burrito in PB one morning and a carne asade burrito for lunch another day. :grimacing:

I must say I am envious of your chosen retirement location. Dh was lamenting the fact that he was talked out of buying a house when he was stationed there 30 years ago (he had planned to use it a rental property after he left). His entire family is on the West Coast so we could easily see ourselves retiring some day in San Diego, esp down in your area. Looking at the value of the home he intended to buy back then versus what it is worth now…:weary:

We still have one more kid in high school but depending on many factors, we may end up there in a few years. After following @coralbrook home renos, we may be needing her if she is still working then!

I’m glad your family had a good time.
I wish the weather had cooperated for you!
This week’s been sunny and warm.

One time, when we were checking into our hotel in Vegas, the clerk said that he had lived in San Diego after his military service and said that the best thing he enjoyed and missed from San Diego was the food! He couldn’t afford to stay, but he said he loved the weather and the people.

Once I realized I didn’t have to live with winter for the rest of my life, it took me 10 years to get here. Five to convince my husband, and five to make it happen.

@aunt bea, the weather was perfect! We arrived last Thursday and came home late last night. It was sunny and in the 70s every day we were there, except Thursday it was cloudy. We were mostly running errands that day so we didn’t care.

Her graduation was this past Sunday morning and could not have been better weather. We were lucky her commencement ceremony was in the morning b/c it was hot in the sun later in the day.

Good to hear! We had relatives who were in town recently and complained about the May Grey! So glad to hear you got good weather!!

Glad you had good weather and enjoyed the graduation.

I’ve lived in Southern California my whole life and in San Diego for almost 41 years since coming to college at SDSU. There is so much to love living here, but I’m not sure that H and I will stay when we retire. There have been so many changes and not all for the better, but we continue to take advantage of all there is to do while we are still living here.

I thought I’d ask here versus starting a new thread
Anyone have restaurants to recommend in the Carlsbad area? I’m going to be in that area wedding dress shopping with my D. It will be a Saturday night 4th of July weekend so I think we need a place that takes reservations.
Thanks

@mom60 I love Campfire. Black Rail. Paon if you are into wine.

We’ve eaten at West Steak and Seafood twice under both its current and previous names and enjoyed our meals. It’s right off the 5.

@Marilyn looks like West Steakhouse has closed due to Covid.
@gosmom thanks I’ll pass those on to my D who is in charge of restaurant search. Other D has been to Campfire and would like to try something new. Future mother in law will likely join us and she is a vegetarian so steakhouse type places are out.

I don’t go to Carlsbad often to eat, but have had good food (pre-pandemic) at Vigilucci’s Cucina Italiana. You will be able to find something vegetarian there.

If you want a place to grab a glass of wine I recommend Carruth Cellars in Carlsbad. If you like beer then try to Eppig Brewery in Vista.

$$$ but Wonderful!

This weekend trip is already costing me a lot of money. Prefer $$ range.
Thanks for all the great suggestions

So Jeune et Jolie is out!

I bear a “hateful grudge” (said in the voice of Pappy O’Daniel from O Brother Where Art Thou) towards Vigilucci’s in Encinitas. Spouse and I went there years ago, took a look at the menu, but then ate the unlisted specials that the server suggested to us. Turns out that the price for each one was considerably more than the general range of the menu, something the server neglected to mention. Felt like a “bait and switch,” in a way. We have never returned to any of their establishments. Perhaps a bit unfair for one meal, but it was the principle for us.

Also, we don’t eat out every week, so we are happy to spend money on a special meal. I celebrated my 30th birthday at Gary Danko when we lived in SF, and have enjoyed memorable dinners while traveling for my kid’s sport.

In San Diego, our personal go-to restaurants are Sbicca Del Mar, or Trattoria I Trulli in Encinitas - still in North County and a short drive from the village in Carlsbad.

Both are situation near the ocean (Sbicca has a small ocean view on the outdoor patio!) and you can have a nice stroll afterwards either on the 101 or along the beach. I prefer both over the Carlsbad village scene, but that is just me.

I’ve taken note of several restaurants mentioned here in this thread - especially those with fabulous views.

Any specific recommendations for a vegetarian restaurant with a view? We lean towards Italian or Mexican usually.

I looked at the Marine Room and that might be out ($$$ and very few veg options) - any other place you’d recommend for sunset views?

Both Coasterra and C Level have vegetarian options and fantastic bay views, but not ocean facing sunset. Coasterra Menu - Mexican Food on Harbor Island, San Diego Island Prime & C Level Menu - Steaks & Seafood in San Diego Another possibility is JRDN - haven’t been but want to - with several vegetable dishes. I’m glad this thread popped up again. I’m going to San Diego again next month, this time alone, to visit my daughter for 10 days (her boyfriend is leaving for 10 weeks of training). I’m going to re-read through the thread to pick out a few more places to try.

For sunset views over the ocean you can try George’s at the Cove (we like the ocean terrace), Eddie V’s (we also like the bar on top) or Dukes. All of these are in La Jolla. There are a few vegetarian options and lots of seafood at all of these.

@showmom858 @Marilyn - thanks for the recommendations. Will check them out.

Unrelated - but hoping one of you might be able to help. We are coming down for a wedding. Would you have any recommendations for a makeup/hair artist in the Liberty Station area? Not for the bridal party - just for a group of close friends attending the wedding.
