***San Diego State Class of 2020 Decisions Thread***

Cal states do not consider EC’s when it comes to decisions. Cal States decisions are based on the numbers (CSU GPA and test scores). See C7 on the common dataset: https://asir.sdsu.edu/Documents/CommonDataSets/CDS2015_2016.pdf

Gumbymom,
On the SDSU site they state that high scores in grades 10 through 12 are considered. If so how do they know what applicants’ 12th grade are since they haven’t finished the year?
Thx

@Skiripper: That is a typo on the CSU Mentor website along with SDSU and I am sure most of the Cal States. They have been notified and not have made the correction. Since CSU applications are due Nov 30, there is no way for them to know your 12th grades. Some CSU’s may ask for Mid-year transcripts after you enroll to make sure you are on track, but not included in their GPA calculation. The only way 12th grades could be reported on the application and used for the CSU GPA calculation would be if the applicant took a Gap year and applied the following year.

Accepted in December. Thought I would do this just cuz.

Good luck to everybody else waiting for a decision, my sister went there and it is an amazing school!

Thanks!

So they don’t send out an email?

Yes, they send out an email to check your web portal but many times the decision will be posted in the portal before the email arrives.

Last year the second wave of acceptances came January 21, which was a Tuesday! It should be coming really soon this year!!

So did any one get an email these last few days?

Nope, I haven’t heard anything. I’ve been checking the webportal frequently too. Nothing.

Maybe I’m missing something here. My SDSU page says:
“Notices of admission decisions will be sent in early March”
So they are going to send out admissions notices before March like they apparently did last year?

@Skiripper they have already sent out the 1st wave of acceptances back in December
but they will be sending more as the months go by, until early March

GUMBYMOM: Chico state had misinterpreted our son’s a-g classes and asked for clarification. In process. So I called SDSU admissions (our #1 choice) to make sure they had no problems. When I asked what our son’s CSU GPA was, they said it was 0.3 lower than what I had calculated. SDSU didn’t give us credit for the honors classes son had taken. Went thru it in detail with the very helpful man on the phone. Turns out that the administrators at our backwoods little school had only qualified a handful of the honors classes with UC/CSU. However they never told us about the problem. Denied it was a problem! I am very unhappy about their negligence.
It lowers son’s EI to 4230 which is iffy for Aero Engineering. What to you advise we do before decisions come out? Can we contact the Admissions Officer who handles our area? Simply call admissions and beg for mercy? Or wait and appeal if he doesn’t get in? There’s always Pomona and Long Beach.
Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

@Skiripper: Sorry to hear about the issue with the Honors classes. You can look up any California HS’s approved a-g courses using this link: https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist/#/list/search/all

I still think he has a good chance since his EI is above the 4100 threshold. Again it will all depend upon how competitive this year’s applicant pool is for the Aerospace Major. Last year there was 836 applicants for Aerospace Engineering and 390 were accepted which means at 46.6% acceptance rate which is pretty good for SDSU.

If he is rejected, then an appeal could be possible. My son’s HS has several Honors courses that were not UC/CSU approved, but are designated as Honors on their transcript, so they could not get the extra bump in GPA either.

I am sure things will be fine and he will probably get into SDSU/CSULB and CPP.

Thanks so much Gumbymom! So you don’t see an advantage to contacting Admissions beforehand? Counting Sr. Year son has 8+ college and AP classes but they don’t count sr. Year. I already have the appeal letter written in my head. Son is a smart and great kid and will succeed. Thanks again.

I would not contact admissions until your son gets an official acceptance/rejection or waitlist. Like I stated above, many schools have “honors” designated classes but if they do not go through the UC/CSU approval process, then there is nothing you or your son can do about it. My son’s HS as 6 Honors designated classes and only 3 are UC/CSU approved. Did they not take these classes because they were not approved, no. They took the classes to show course rigor and to challenge themselves. We always want the best for kids and I am sure your son will end up at a school where he is meant to be. Everything will work at in the end.

I wish SDSU would take into consideration first semester senior grades, it would give my DS the bump up he needs. Does anyone know if it’s worth appealing a denial if you just have a higher index from senior grades?

This is from the website regarding SDSU appeals. Having good grades Senior year would not be a reason for an appeal since SDSU expects you at least to maintain your current GPA as part of their provisional admission.
Higher EI is not an extenuating circumstance.

The appeals process is only for applicants who have a serious and compelling reason that they feel the committee should consider.

To submit an appeal, carefully read and follow the five steps below. Only complete appeals will be considered.
Appeal within 30 days. All appeals must be received by SDSU within 30 days of date of the “missed deadline,” or “deny” notification/communication from the SDSU Office of Admissions. Students who were denied admission may only submit one appeal per admission term.
Prepare documentation. To have an appeal processed, you must submit ONE COMPLETE PACKAGE to include:
The Admissions Appeal Request (download PDF, print, and complete form)
Letter of appeal detailing your extenuating circumstance (e.g., hospitalization, military service, family crisis)
Supporting documentation that substantiates your appeal. You must document your extenuating circumstance using the information in the table below.

Thanks I appreciate your advice.

The Explore SDSU open house page still says to check back in January of 2016 to sign up. Anyone know what’s up with that?
