I’m currently attending USF and I’m thinking of transferring to SFSU next year but I don’t know if it will be the right choice. This is my first year and so far I haven’t been enjoying it. I haven’t made any friends, and haven’t worked on any film projects at all since I don’t know anyone. I’m majoring in Media Studies and minoring in Film and I haven’t taken any of those classes yet but something’s pushing me to want to transfer to SFSU for film.
Have any of you guys done film at SFSU or USF? Please tell me your experiences. I think I have to re apply to SFSU by Nov 30 to be able to transfer.
SF State is supposed to have the best film and broadcasting program in the Bay Area. I took a special effects class there, but it was back in the '80s, so I don’t know how relevant my experience is these days. It was a good class - lots of hands on. There were students from UC Berkeley’s film school in the class, and they said it was very common for UC Berkeley students to take classes at SF State because there was a wider range of film classes at SF State.
note that you have to be a Jr to transfer. You may also loose some credits as you move from a private to public school. If you are eligible, apply - then sit down with an advisor at SF State and see what they have to say.
It’s not unusual for a student in the first semester of college to be doing general education rather than courses in the major. What is the “something pushing” you to want to transfer? If it’s a matter of not being comfortable at USF, the first year can be tough and it takes a while to get settled. If it’s a question of money, then that is serious because the cost of tuition is significantly higher at USF. Before making a decision, you might visit SFSU and see if the department has someone available to discuss the program. (Public transport is available between the two campuses). You might need to do a bit of research on both programs to see if you really want to transfer.
