I am currently a transfer student attending a community college in California. I have been accepted to San Francisco State University under their film program (B.A.) and I have also been accepted to UC Santa Cruz under their film program (B.A.) through the TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) Program. I am wondering which school out of the two will provide a better education for film? I am pursuing a career in Film and have not heard anything about either school. I wasn't even aware that UC Santa Cruz had a Film Program (B.A.) until I did some research.

Sidenote: My top choice school is USC, but if I do not get in, I will be picking between SFSU & UCSC. If this is what ends up occurring, I will want to get my Master's in Film at USC. Is there a better school between the two, that USC look more favorably upon when looking at my application for Graduate School?

I think you should go with UCSC. I don’t know anything about your major, but I do know that if future employers had to choose between identical applicants, one from a Cal State and one from a UC, they would go with the UC applicant :)

@^ lol happytrain. I’m gonna support you for that statement and hope no cal state lovers will come and start another argument. haha

i disagree with UChappy. The major at the school matters not just the school itself. If you were a marine bio major I would say definitely go with ucsc. But SFSU has a very good communication/arts program with a reputation to go with it and it IS impacted so congratulations! The journalism is top-notch and one of the people off the top of my head, kari byron, red head from mythbusters, went to SFSU and got a job with discovery of all companies. my final thought is that you are more likely to get a job in film because in fact more film companies reside in the city thus more jobs. Yes resumes are important, no doubt, but networking with people is equally important. Networking in santa cruz, although beautiful, in the realm of film will not be rewarding.

I am having the same problem but with poli sci versus ucsc versus sfsu. do research and goodluck.

@ferrari hey! have some love for the csu’s! just because the UC system is deemed a ‘research instituion’ does not mean that this has any weight in the realm of film or film resumes. Now biology majors would be at an advantage to seek a UC education, especially in graduate studies.

For a major like film it would probably be best, if possible, to talk with people who are actually working in the industry and get their opinions on which school is more highly represented and highly thought of in the profession before making your decision.
