Which would you choose and why?

They are both great schools. DD had both in her final choice list also. She went to an accepted student event at both schools and just felt more comfortable…and felt more welcome…at SCU. She will finish her four years there this June. Also, she is an engineering major and felt that the program at SCU was just a tad stronger than USD.

To be honest, you have to figure out what is right for YOU. Both schools have much good to offer and many similarities.

what is your major and where are you from?

did you visit both schools?

I got in for Computer science at both schools. benefits bout SCU: 5 year MS degree, benefits of private school, alumni, blah blah, 25k scholarship
benefits of UCSD: good school, oen of the best in the nation, has a name
cons ucsd: financial crisis for UCS, too many ppl in class, very hard to get into 5 year ms program

im realy confused and ihave 1 week
help!

I am doing a double major of political science and communications with a concentration in journalism. I am from Seal Beach. I visited both schools and loved the both equally.

lifeistough: If you like both schools, and can see yourself at either, and with that whopper scholarship probably making the cost equal or close, then I would choose SCU, hands down, no comparison! I beleive the small class and engaging discussions, getting to know professors as well as classmates in an intimate and invigorating classroom setting is a far better academic experience than just being a number at a huge, public institution, where you have to fight to get every class. But, I am a big advocate of smaller, private, colleges and a liberal arts education, especially one that is “values/morals” centered as it is at Santa Clara.

tanner: both are great schools. Did you look at the cirriculum at both? any preferences there? San Diego is better than San Jose, but I personally think Santa Clara is a better school, overall, though USD is close. If you are interested in working in the Bay area, and/or high tech, then SCU has the definate edge there.

OP – Consider the value. Living off-campus? You save big bucks.

lifeistough – It’s a hard decision - I agree. However, I believe that you should go with your gut feeling. What others tell you about a school isn’t right, because in reality, it’s you who’s going to have to live with the school for 4+ years. Contemplate this: Which school do you see yourself happier in, in the future?

While I’m sure you would be pretty happy at both schools, it sounds like you’re leaning to UCSD, yet are unsure. Don’t be unsure - don’t let others sway your opinion! If you like it, go for it. Good luck.

Parents – I do not mean to instigate anything, but I’m pretty sure there is a forum for parent discussion - a place where adults can talk about their kids. This is a place where kids talk with other kids. I know you have a kid who attends this school, but please be mindful that the mindsets of kids and adults are totally different.

It’s ok to say the parents with attending kids are biased. But since when this board becomes “kids only”. I thought this is a place for anyone, parents as well as students, to discuss anything related to SCU.

Well, parents are way too biased and should try to let the students decide for themselves.

Thank you, Yay1029. I totally agree with Seamore there.

Parents with kids at the school tend to be waaaay too biased…besides, they are not the ones attending the school, how much do they really know?..it is all through the eyes and experience of their kids. Current SCU students are the only ones qualified to give other kids advice and opinions on the specifics of the school and programs.

Parents have their own “Parent” Forums…parents should voice their opinions there instead. Just my opinion…seems like way too parents many turn their kids’ college experiences into their own.

I think parents and students should chat here and all the boards. The only thing is that it is then helpful to be clear what perspective one is posting from - which is usually the case.

I presume a kid who is smart enough to get accepted to SCU and UCSD is able to 1) figure out if the perspective being posted is from a parent or student 2) if the parent or student has real life experience with the school/s in question 3) if the parent or student is just giving general advice/comparison information. In other words, trust the OP can “filter” the responses accordingly.

To all of you offended students, I am a parent but my daughter is a student. She has been VERY helpful to CC families…meets them, gives them tours, answers their emails, etc. She is also a student ambassador and works in the admissions office. I post here because I think it’s helpful. I only offer my opinion occasionally but basically stick to statements of facts I know about the school…and if I don’t know…I ask my kid, the student.

But whatever, if you’d prefer I stopped posting here…fine.

OMG-- I was going to let this conversation slide (some kids are just too immature to realize that they are being given a huge advantage in gaining knowledge from people other than their peers.)

But, if Thumper leaves, we have very little coming down the information pipeline for SCU. She and her daughter have been a huge help. I could list all of the parents and SCU students who have contributed helpful information about SCU, but that would be silly. (The posters who want parents to jump are not included on that list, and haven’t contributed before.)

This site is for college information-- I am thankful for all of it, regardless of if it is posted by a college student, high school student who is new to the CC community, parent, administrator or a hippie who lives across the street from campus.

I don’t appreciate posts from ■■■■■■, or students who have no idea what the CC forums are all about. Sharing information and opinions is fine. Suggesting that parents or other posters take a hike is not.

absolutely…the idea here is to learn from others. yes, parents offer a different perspective than kids. that is why I was clear in my “name” that I am a parent.

yes, students, you should be wise enough to want to read the parents’ perspectives, also, as it is different than yours and your peers, and therefore a good thing to hear!!!

Oh…and just for the record…my daughter and I HEARD about Santa Clara University from a PARENT (perish the thought) on College Confidential. Thank goodness!!

Still not sure which schools you mean.
SCU is Santa Clara University Jesuit, small
USD University Of San Diego Jesuit, small
UCSD is the huge UC I think you are talking about

Well…the title of the thread is Santa Clara or USD…I think another poster along the way put in the UCSD info.

UCSD vs USD is confusing sometimes. My friend’s daughter sent the ACT score to the wrong school, the girl just clicked the first school she saw a “San Diego”

And I am not sure everyone knows that Santa Clara University used to be named University of Santa Clara. From wikipedia

Otherwise, we’ll have two USCs. :)

No, three of them. University of South Carolina.
And sorry for change the topic.

Those San Diego universities names drive me nuts. In fact, if I was the one applying to schools, I’d rank USD lower just because of the confusion. At our house it’s called “University of San Diego, the small one overlooking Mission Bay”

I call SCU ‘the University of Santa Clara’. Just habit, I guess.
