I was accepted as a transfer student to Chapman University and Santa Clara University for computer science. Chapman is offering grants for $30k a year, but it looks like SCU will only be offering need based aid.
Is SCU worth going into significant debt to attend instead of Chapman? My guess is probably not, but I was wondering whether its location in silicon valley might make it worth the extra cost.
What is the difference in debt that you and your parents would be taking?
A lot of this depends upon whether your parents are involved (taking PLUS or co-signing) and how they are financially situated. If they can well afford it, and are willing, that’s one thing. If not, you can sink them. Sometimes being an adult is recognizing that though parents might want to give it all to you, it’s really not a good thing for them to do so in terms of signing for loans that can severely impact their future.
@UCBUSCalum I wasn’t eligible for transfer to the Cal States because I didn’t complete the golden four and the major pre-requisite classes for most of the campuses. If I can avoid it, I’d rather not take another year at community college to qualify for transfer to the CSUs.
@cptofthehouse The difference in debt would be about $10,000. I would be taking on this debt as my parents already have a lot in parent-plus loans for my sibling.
Also, if it’s relevant, this would be the computer science major in SCU’s College of Arts & Sciences rather than the College of Engineering, but I was accepted to the engineering school at Chapman.
i go to chapman if this helps. i’m transferring out. i had $30k in aid and they cut it by $20k a week ago out of the blue. not worth it ! i’m trying to transfer to SCU now
