It's going to be my first year going into college. I'm going to Santa Monica College. I got into a very low math class, Math 81 (basic arithmetic). I know I don't belong in that class and I am going to re-take the placement test again. BUT, if that does not work out, I want to make sure I have a back up plan. I want to transfer to a UC after my 2nd year being in a CC. In order to do that, i need to take Math 52 (elementary statistic) AND Math 28 (Calculus 1).

Since I am new to SMC, I don't know how the whole semester/quarter thing goes, so can someone please explain to me??

If I do VERY well in my current class (81), will my professor recommend me to skip a class or two?

How many classes can i take in 1 year for math to get ahead?

PLEASE give me ANY SUPPORTING ADVICE. I AM WILLING TO TAKE EXTRA CLASSES.

Hey Deereel, hope you got my message, to answer your questions:

** I don’t know how the whole semester/quarter thing goes, so can someone please explain to me?? **

SMC is a semester based CC, meaning there is only Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter semesters. Spring and Fall semesters are considered the ‘long’ semesters, in that they generally 16 weeks in length. Meanwhile, summer and winter are considered the ‘short’ semesters because they are typically between 5-8 weeks long. The classes still teach you the same material, but the pace at which you learn it at is vastly different. For example, if you took Chem 11, a 5 unit class during Fall your lecture would probably be around 2 hours long 2 days a week and you would have a special lab day. But if you took it in Winter, your class would probably be four days a week and the lecture/lab would be 6-7 hours long.

Because of the big time differences, most full time students take 1 class during a short semester and 4 classes during a long semester.

I don’t think you can get a reccomendation,I believe you have to take all the classes in order unless you retake the assesment test.

How many classes can i take in 1 year for math to get ahead?
If I were you, I would do this:

Fall 2010: Math 81
Winter 2011: Math 84
Spring 2011: Math 31
Sumer 2011: Math 20
Fall 2011: Math 54 (stats) & Math 26
Winter 2012: Math 28
Spring 2012: Math 28 if you didn’t take it in winter.

Read the message I sent you . ;)

For Fall 2011: Math 54 and Math 26

Is it possible i can take it at smc AND a different school?

Yeah you can take classes at any school you want just make sure they are accredited for transfer. I’m taking classes at four different colleges this upcoming semester.
