So I don't go to SMC but I'm trying to fulfill the Cal American Cultures requirement this Summer because I have nothing else to do. I could do this by taking Hist 10 (in which both sections are closed) or Comm 10 (3 sections open, online section closed). Since I can't see how many people are enrolled in the class or even how many seats there were available in general, can anyone give me an idea on whether the Comm classes are most likely going to be full by the time I get my registration time (assuming I fill out my application to SMC today)? I'm assuming they will be, but I figured I'd ask. Also, does SMC have a registration waitlist for after the class is closed or do people just show up on the first day to petition or do they email teachers for an unofficial waitlist? Any information would be appreciated :)

Comm 10 is already full, but students drop and add all the time. There is no waitlist and professors rarely respond to emails regarding add codes.

Your best bet is to register…then log in every day and keep hitting refresh. I did this many times and I always ended up getting into the classes I wanted =)

Really? The searchable schedule says they’re still open and that it updates every 2 hours. Today it was updated at 2:00 PM.

I am also an avid cheater in adding classes in the middle of the night when someone drops lol. My school instituted an official waitlist last semester so no one can do it anymore. But thanks for the info! I’m definitely going to do that.

Correction: I thought you were only interested in the online course. Yes, the others are open.

BTW I took Comm 10 online w/ Munoz and it was easy, I earned an A.

Yeah I’m going to try to watch for the online class drops but I’m sure lots of people will be so I’m not counting on it. I live in Orange County and the commute isn’t too appealing to me but whatever, I’ll take what I can get and it’s only six weeks.

If you happen to see a drop in the online section, let me know :)

very very very veryx100 smart choice for fulfilling Berkeley’s American culture requirement
I’ve seen lots of peeps fulfilling american culter at cal and not so happy about it

also, consider music 33 (When I was there this was also one other way to ful fill this requeirement)
Personally I liked music 33 better than comm but it all depends on people :)

Yeah I just applied to like ten CCCs that offer a transferable online class for that requirement so hopefully I can get into something if not at SMC. I really don’t care which class I take (they’re all relatively boring to me :/) but I’d like to finish it before I transfer. Barely any southern CA schools even offer transferable classes for it… not sure why.

I’m doing mine this quarter :D

don’t forget to tell ur Berk counselor that ur doing a summer class
