Read all of the American Pageant (15th edition), and using AMSCO & “5 Steps to a 5 500 Practice Questions for A.P US History” to review!
American Pageant was good for getting everything in for the first time (and a reference to look back on). AMSCO is great for remembering everything. 500 Questions for A.P US History actually consists of mostly SAT2-style questions (though with some passage-based questions and SAQs too, which aren’t needed), so it’s great for practice.
I recently took the AP exam and the subject test. I personally don’t think it’s necessary to read American Pageant if you read AMSCO. REA’s Crash Course and/or Barron’s flash cards would be a good supplement to review.
There will probably be presidential quote questions on the test, where you’ll have to identify a quote to a president. Googling “famous presidential quotes apush” will have a quizlet about quotes as a first result.
I took the test today; how was it for other people? It was okay for me, but there were definitely at least ~10 I was unsure of, especially at the beginning, and that kind of stressed me out.
I left 0 blank (I got down to two choices for the unsure questions so 50/50 chance each), and I guessed on about 10+/-. Out of those 10+/- guesses, 3 were correct, 3 were wrong, the rest I don’t remember the questions. A couple of the questions I remember that I was sure I got correct, were correct. I was unsure for a couple of the first half of the questions (because colonial and early America is harder!), but I breezed through the other half (the later America) as if the test makers gave up on making it hard.
I want at least a 700 so I never have to take it again, but I think it might be 750+. Also praying for a good curve (-10) for a possible 800 but I know luck won’t let me have it :((
OMG same! Colonial America is so hard! And when I saw the first question, I was like “WOW THIS IS NICE.” (But not really). I think my guess was correct, but not sure. I only remember 3 of the questions I guessed on, and I think I only got one of those right HAHAHA! I’m sure you did well, though.
The test had things which weren’t in AMSCO or REA US History, but were in the American Pageant. To those who said reading the American Pageant was a waste of time, who’s looking smart now B-)?
Well, assuming I get a 700+. When I did my Math 2, I came in assuming an 800 and got a 730 (which I’m still sending off, it’s a good score). Though I didn’t feel too sure about that Math test after I took it. So I have lower expectations for this test even though I felt like I did well.
There are people on reddit posting questions and what they think are the answers (though I won’t discuss any questions/answers/exam content anywhere). The “easier” questions were all good and correct from what I’m seeing. The “not-too-sure” guessing questions were 50/50, understandable because I eliminated 3 out of the 5 choices lol.
Well, if it makes you feel better, this is not my first time taking a USH Subject Test; I had to retake it because I did very poorly the first time! But it’s funny, because after the first test, I felt really good about it for some strange reason? This time around, though, I didn’t feel as good about it. Reading some of people’s answers on reddit makes me feel better, though!
I got an 800 just using the APUSH Princeton Review book… (aka, I didn’t study at all for the subject test & just relied on my AP studying to carry me, but I got a 5 on the exam too!)
For anyone who didn’t get the score they wanted, don’t fret! Many good schools would have no problem with a 700+, and if you got below that, hard work will carry you there on the next test date I’m sending in a 730 Math 2 with this score because double-800s aren’t needed, and I’d still send in a lower USH score.
I don’t mean to be rude, but I’m assuming you’re pretty new to College Confidential, and judging from your small post history & the nature of your comments thus far, that you haven’t been on this site much before. Look at any of the abundant SAT 2 score threads about panicked high schoolers afraid that their percentiles have doomed them, and every experienced user will tell you that the scores themselves are standardized so that a 750 on Math 2 is worth the same as a 750 on Lit/Spanish/etc., despite what the percentiles seem to indicate. I’d suggest doing some more research on how schools view subject tests before commenting on these forums (…and saying that a 750+ score for a non-STEM applicant is “suicidal” lol).
I’m sorry; my statement was very blunt. I go to a very, very competitive high school and so my perspective is probably very biased towards perfection. However, on the score report itself, the Collegeboard states that you cannot compare different subject test scores with each (for example, you cannot compare a 750 Biology M score with a 750 Literature score). Just food for thought.
