SAT 2's...is it THAT important?

Ok, so I’ma junior and i really want to go to some of the ivys and other highly comp. schools, but I was wondering what the point of doing these SAT 2’s. I already have the SAT’s, ACT’s , and other AP exams to worry about. I have no clue whne to take them, I was jstu wondering, can you take them like after you sent out applications? or do al of them have to be in before? This whole SAT 2’s thing really confuses me!

are they imporant for selcctive schools? If the schools require them, then YES. The best time to take SATIIs is when you finish the class and the material is fresh in your mind, i.e, spring of that year. Can you take them in the fall of senior year, yes, but you'll have to review over the summer so you don't forget the material since these test really are content based.

Since you are taking AP's, try the SATII for that test. For example, if you are taking AP Bio, take the Bio SATII in May; they're within a few days of each other. Ditto, if you are taking AP US Hist. If you are taking AP Euro hist, you have alredy prepped for 75% of the SATII World History exam. Ask your teacher to borrow a world history book, and for suggestions on which chapters to self-study for the World Hist SATII.

You can take a math in June (Math II if you've completed pre-calc and are strong in math, bcos it has a better curve).

Note: the SATII testing schedule is the Saturday between the two weeks of AP tests.

Hey thanks for the comprehensive response, I'm taking AP Bio right now and I'm planning to take the SAT 2's on them in may. Most of the schools I want to go are requiring 2-3 Sat 2's. I'm in Ap Calc right now too. I was plannign to take the Math level IIC in June, but I need to take the SAT's and they are on the same day. So I guess that leaves me with next fall, even thought I will also need to take the SAT's then too. I wish I knew about the SAT 2's before...Ugh! Hye bluebayou, do you know if you can kind on say on ur app. to college that you are going to take the SAT 2's that spring and then send them the scores, or do you tihnk it will be to late? THanks so much

bbbbbbbbummmmmmmmmp

You can take up to three SAT II's on the same day, so you could take the math one the same day as the bio, if you wanted to. It might be better than waiting until October, the next time they are offered after June. My son had to wait until October to take them, due to conflicts with music events, and he did not do as well as expected. It really IS best to take them right after finishing a course in the subject.

And, no, you can't wait to take them until spring of your senior year--the colleges want the scores when you submit your application.

Does any school require more than two SAT II subject tests? I'm planning on doing Math and US History and that's it? Any potential problems?

To odan:

yes, some schools do require more than 2 SAT IIs (many schools require 3). however, the requirements are changing due to the new SAT, so your best bet is to check out the FAQ on the school's website. For example, Harvard is still requiring 3 SAT IIs along with the new or old SAT.

Susan is correct about spring of Sr year, altho I don't recommend taking 3 in a single day. One other thing to think about....if you plan on applying early (EA or ED), October is typically the last time for test scores to be added to your file, but some schools will accept Nov tests if you rush scores. If you apply RD, some schools will take Jan test scores, but you should check their web sites to be sure.

I believe schools ask for either the ACT or the SAT plus SAT IIs. I think the ACT test covers both so if you are planning to submit that, you might not have to take the IIs.

Penn still has not decided on whether they want 1 or 2 tests for next year's applicants.

Birdie: while some schools will accept the ACT in lieu of SAT and SATII's, most do not. They will however, accept the ACT + writing in place of new SAT., but still require the SAT II's.

Anyone know if you are a senior and can send SAT II's after you applied?

I want to take my SAT 2s in May (I'm taking AP Bio and AP US Hist this year). So I won't take the SAT in May. But, I might possibly want to take the SAT in June, depending on how March 12 goes. Can I take Math IIC and the New SAT on the same day. I'd rather wait till june to take the 2c, since my AP Calc class will be reviewing for it after the AP Exam.

You can't take SAT IIs and the SAT I on the same test day.

the SATI and SATII is given at the same exact starting time, so as momof...mentioned, you cannot take them at the same time.

But what if I take the SAT on a sunday (idk if its possible, but Sundays are listed under testing dates on CB.com)

If the schools say that the SAT 2's are important, then they do hold some weight in the admissions process. If schools say that they are optional, then they aren't necessary, so you shouldn't send them in unless you did well on them.

pentasa, you can only take the SAT on a sunday for religious reasons. taking the SAT IIs on the saturday would pretty much preclude you from using this argument.
