SAT 4 times: good or bad

hmm.. after superscoring.. i got 700CR, 780M, 680W.. I have confidence in improving my writing in december.. reading i'm not sure tho.. would taking the test again worth the time and effort? Or would taking 4 times makes things worse..?

4 times is pushing it a bit (adcoms might think you're obsessive). I think 3 is good enough, and a lot of colleges don't give writing section very much weight in comparison to other sections (or like georgetown, don't regard writing at all). Your scores aren't bad by any means, even if you're trying to apply to HYPM. In my opinion, don't bother.

With a score like yours, I think a fourth time might be being a bit too excessive. However, many IVY League admissions office and various top school offices have told me via email that they do not care how many times you take it as they'll consider your highest score (although the email from Cornell said that they may wonder why you took the SAT so many times when there are other more important aspects to your admission to college).

Hopefully that answers your question up a bit.

The College Board keeps figures showing some students take the SAT five times or more, just as juniors and seniors.

<a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/highered/ra/sat/AverageScores.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/highered/ra/sat/AverageScores.pdf</a></p>

Colleges say they look at your best scores--Harvard strengthens that to saying "ONLY your highest scores"--so the key idea is to gain the highest scores you can, without worrying too much about how many times you took the test.

But test scores aren't the only thing that matters for college admission, even for the students with the highest scores,

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=377882%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=377882</a>

so make sure to take care of everything else that is important.

i was wondering when tokenadult would post here.

thanks everyone.. but i still don't know what to do.. what if let's say i'm confident that i could get 720CR and 750W (which could make it 1500/1600 and 2250/2400).. then will this be worth the fourth try and effort and money!

yeap, scores aint everything but...

I heard that colleges frown on 4, or more, tests. However, colleges frown on a lot of other things....honestly though, think about it...you have an amazing score as it is...is it really worth your troubles to take the test again even with the risk of not doing better?

Just screw the SAts now man, you're set. worry about other things

You can show you're a good writer by writing good essays.

Just retake it! Another attempt won't hurt. What's wrong with taking a test so many times?

@6y6y6y

Eventually, colleges see it as a negative thing that you're test obsessed. 3 or more times is more of an unspoken (some schools say it) limit.

Where is your evidence for this? You say some schools say this--where is the statement?

Now it's 700CR 780M 680W (1480/1600, 2160/2400)

and if let's say after the FOURTH time,
i get 720CR and 750W (which makes it 1500/1600 and 2250/2400)..

would this score improve my chance big time? or will the improvement not be enough to counteract the consequence of taking a fourth time?

Thanks a lot.

tokenadult, sad to say but i'm not a great writer..

i also wondering abt this......wait for others....

Read "Stumbling on happiness"! Scientific research has shown that ppl tend to regret over things which they did NOT do rather than things they DID.

The bottom line is: If you're still pondering over the "sanity" of retaking the test, just save your time and brain cells by retaking it! Good luck :D

What is your source of 'scientific research.' I don't think such things can be proven (emotions such as regret). It looks more like 'what usually happens' to me.

I went from a 2240 -> 2390 so retaking definately helped.

8parks11, you got a 2390 in 4th time?
how about 2300-->2400?

Not in 4th time.. 2nd time..

so.....definitely if you got 2240 the first time, you should retake...
but how about the 4th time?
