Sat/act

Why does the USAFA SS website say that 530/520 is competive for Summer Seminar? Is it really? Just curious…

You definitely have to be a bit more competitive than that...simply because most applicants have much higher scores.

Those scores are not competitive for academy admissions, but high school juniors are expected to make somewhat higher scores later on. That's why they lower the cutoff for SS. However, if your scores are in that low range, I wouldn't have very high expectations about getting into SS.

i know for the sat you can combine your scores from different tests. (i.e a 700 in math from a test in may and a 650 on english from a test in june). but do the same rules apply for the act? i somehow got a 35 and 34 on the english and reading part, but only 25's on the math and SR (which is odd because im definately better at math than english). if i can use the math and Sr scores from my upcoming act then i would have a really solid composite score.

Not only does it apply for the ACT, but I believe if you have a higher ACT score in a part that is like the SAT (ie math), then the ACT score is considered instead.

My son says that the AFA looks at the ACT only if a SAT is unavailable, or if your SAT is too low and your ACT is higher. He also says the only way you can superscore your ACT is if every score on the test is a 26 or above. That would mean if you have a 34 in English but a 25 on science, you would not be able to use any scores from that test. I am sorry to tell you that, but that was the word he received Mrs. Durbeck, the head of Northwestern Preparatory.

hum, hadn't heard that before.

Patriotmom,

I'm afraid you are wrong; I had scores less than 26 on tests and I was still able to mix and match. I would've ended up with a 27 ACT, but the AFA counted it as a 28 due to the subscoring.

This is just what was told to her.

Word choice.

Someone mentioned something about needing to take the ACT with the writing portion. I signed up for the standard ACT test, will the academy accept this?

I too am wondering the above^^^.

I am sorry if any of my information is incorrect. I know my son's SAT and ACT were both super-scored, but this is the information he was given at prep school. They also told him that a 26 was the minimum acceptable score on any sub-test. His online application does not list any score other than the subscores.

Regarding the writing portion of the ACT. The applicants were told last year (class entering in 2006) to take the ACT with writing; but because so many did not, they sent out a letter letting them know that their test scores would be accepted that year without the writing. I don't know if they accepted the non-writing ACT this year (2007) or not.

Does anyone know anything about this ^^^^?

I think somewhere I read that they recommended that you take the writing portion, but that it wasn't required. I think I might have seen it on academyadmissions, but I saw it a little while ago so I don't know how well it applies for 2012.
