I currently have 1290 on the New SAT and want to raise it to the following range 1350-1400. My subscores are: 610 Verbal Section ( 26 in Reading and 35 in Writing) and 680 in Math. I want to major in physics when I go to college so would it be more beneficial to raise my score in the very low Reding section I had or shoot for a perfect score in Math to reach my goal?
If you’re planning on attending UC Berkeley, your math score is still pretty low for a STEM major. I’d recommend focusing on that for the time being, and if you can consistently score in the mid to high 700’s on practice tests, THEN move on to the reading section. Also, do you already have your subject test scores? If you’ve got a good Math II, that could help balance out the regular SAT math.
I got a 650 in the Math II but that is totally my fault. I spent all my time studying for the Chemistry SAT and did not study a single bit for the Math II. I plan on retaking it in December and I will make sure I’m ready for it then. If get a 750 in Math II do you think that it will compensate for my English score? I plan on taking the New SAT in October and in November so I think for the remainder of my summer I’ll work on Reading just so that it isn’t ridiculously low. Plus I am taking an English class at the community college right now so might as well focus on one subject at a time, right?
One of the best and worst things about the SAT’s is how much you can change your scores by studying. I started off scoring in the mid to low 700’s on practice tests, but I was able to get an 800 on SAT II math. If you’re in calc, you should already have all the math you need- the issue is usually trying to re-familiarize yourself with old algebra and trig concepts that you haven’t used in several years, and this can definitely be accomplished by studying. It definitely makes sense to focus on one section at a time though. If you have until November or December, working on English for a while first should be fine, as long as you pace yourself well and be sure to make time for the math when you need to. I don’t think a math score will help compensate for a lower English score though. If you don’t mind me asking, why didn’t you take the physics SAT? Chemistry isn’t a bad choice, but it seems odd given that you had the option to take physics.
My high school does not offer a high school physics course, all advanced courses are taken at the local community college. The SAT covers all of introductory physics, but in order for me to be prepared for the SAT Physics I would have to take three semesters worth of physics at the college to have all the material down. I chose Chemistry because I took a semester of introductory chemistry at the college and it covered almost everything I needed to know for the SAT. The only problem is that it was very rushed and was strongly based on calculation rather than concept. I got 570 on the Chemistry SAT due to this.
