SAT and ACT

I’m trying to get into UM and UF my schedule os pretty packed with AP and Honors courses. Ive taken 3 years of language in spanish. I have an unweighted GPA of a 2.879 (Spanish 3 and Drivers Ed as Well as H.O.P.E brought my GPA down). I got a flat 1500 on the SAT my first time taking it without really studying at all. Should I take the SAT or ACT next or both. If I do take both I won’t really have time to study very hard for both because I also have to study for AP exams in May. Recommendations?? I’m trying to get into UM or UF

First, your priority has to be your GPA/Junior classes. Make sure you don’t sacrifice your GPA to study for either test.

If you can, take both test, even if you can’t study much for either test. Taking the ACT will give you a sense of what’s the test is like and since you’ve already taken the SAT, you may find it easier the 2nd time. But, if you can only take one test, make it the ACT.

Then, over the summer (when you don’t have to worry about your AP classes), study for the test(s). Take the SAT and/or ACT again in the Fall.

Good Luck!

I was told I should start applying to colleges in July, im not really sure how the test scores would work if i do decide to take the ACT now and the SAT later on do i send in my scores then to colleges or do i send my scores in both times?

I agree with gator. In general, students do improve their scores with repeat testing. I also agree that kids should take both the SAT and the ACT and see which one works best for them. I don’t think it’s necessary to apply to schools as early as July. The deadline for early decision for most schools is sometime in November, so as long as you beat the deadline, you’ll be fine. Maybe take both tests a couple of times before applying to schools. Consider waiting until AFTER your scores come in before deciding which ones to send to schools. It’s more expensive that way, but it gives you control over which scores the colleges see. Best of luck.

Also, don’t feel pressured to make early decision deadlines. Regular decision might work better for you.

You can submit your application, and then submit your test scores at a later date. July is a bit early for any applications.

For example, the deadline for UF is Nov 1st, for UM it’s Nov 1st (EA and ED) and Jan 1’st (Regular admissions). UF requires your test scores before the end of December. So, you could submit your application before Nov 1’st, but then take the ACT/SAT test again in Oct/Nov.

Is Kaela Wyche your real name? I would suggest you set up another CC account without your picture and name. Anonymity on the internet is very critical in this day and age.

Lets be honest here, your current GPA and SAT Score would make it highly unlikely to get into UF and UM. You need to raise your SAT Score to above 1900 and your weighted GPA of above 4.0 if you want to increase your chances of getting into UF or UM. Are you involved in Athletics in High School? If so, are you looking at possibly getting an Athletic Scholarship when you apply to College?

Do you have any grades below C that you could retake for grade forgiveness and raise you UW GPA above 3.0? If you could get your GPA above 3.0, I would shoot for doing Dual Enrollment (DE) starting in the Summer and doing Early Admissions for your final year in High School. Doing Dual Enrollment in lieu of AP will put you in a better position in case you are unable to get at least a 3 or above on your AP classes. It might be too lake to get into the Dual Enrollment Program at this late stage, but you can surely try. DE, like AP, can significantly impact your Weighted GPA. I believe that DE is a bit easier and you earn “real” college credits during the process, while avoiding the risk of not getting 3 and above with AP Courses.

What AP Classes have you done or are currently taking to date? What other Florida Universities are on your targeted list and which would you consider safeties?

Your weighted GPA need to be 4.1 and SAT score much higher for a shot at UF. You can keep UF and UM as high reaches, but you need to have better targets. I suggest looking at Eckerd, Stetson, Barry, Lynn, Millsaps, Hiram, Guilford, plus FIU, FAU, UNF, and as reaches Agnes Scott, Spelman,NCF, Clark, and USF.
As Psata said, use grade foregiveness/replacement/repair, and retake any class where you got a C (or D!)
Prepare seriously for the SAT and the ACT, using “question of the day”, number2 dot com, Khan Academy. The ACT may be better, especially since it’s not changing in upcoming year!
