I really want to go to UF next year but I'm starting to worry! I got a 25 on the ACT, and just took it again today but will most likely only get a 26. Timed tests are absolutely horrible for me. My UF GPA is around a 4.3 and by the time I graduate next year I'll have had 9 AP classes and all the rest honors. Do you think I'll get in even though my ACT score is killing me?

What did you get on the SAT? People usually do better on one than the other…my son did terrible on the ACT but did great on the SAT. The SAT was the one UF went with…

I did even worse on the SAT…1670. So disappointed

Have you tried one of those prep programs like Kaplan? I know some people say you don’t need them but they brought my son’s SAT score up tremendously. On his first practice test he got around what you got…but by the end of the program he was able to bring it quite a bit. He took the SAT twice and super scored out at almost 2100. The 2011 incoming freshman stats had an admission rate of 78% at an ACT score of 26-30…and with your great GPA and AP classes I think you’ve got a good chance but if I think bringing up that ACT score would really help you.

Focus on the ACT because your SAT seems significantly lower. I would buy a prep book for the ACT, and shoot for a 30+. If you can get a 30, I think you’ll get in.

Yeah I’m going to stick with the ACT and take it one more time in September. I’ll buy the real ACT prep guide to help prepare me and hopefully my mom will let me get a tutor. Content wise I know a lot, it’s the timing that hurts me a ton :(

Just practice, practice, practice. I know with Kaplan a lot of it is just taking the test in real time over and over again until you get more comfortable with the test. Buy a book with quite a few practice tests in it, grab a timer and set it for allotted time for each section as if you were really taking it and complete the entire test at one sitting. And keep doing that. I think you’ll get more comfortable and less freaked about it the more you do it. When he did Kaplan (we paid for the online version) he would be up there “taking the test” for 3 hours or so…and he did it several times a week. It’s a real time killer but it’s summer anyway, right? Good luck :)

I was in the same situation as you when I applied to UF. My ACT score was a 26 and my SAT score was a 1690. During my senior year I took 3 AP classes, 4 Dual enrollment classes, and 1 honors class. I wrote a pretty good essay and I was accepted. But you should definitely try to get your scores up! And if you have any questions you can message me :)
