SAT Chem or Physics?

Hi,

I took the SAT Chemistry Subject test in June and I don't think I did very well. My Chemistry course ended last week and I'm taking Honors Physics next year. Should I study more over the summer for Chemistry or start learning about Physics since I'm taking the course next year?

Assuming you’re a…rising junior? Wait for your score at least. you should definitely NOT retake it if you got above 650 (or 700 if you are looking at Ivies). But regardless, IMO you should take a look at your Physics textbook (if possible, or buy a sat subject test physics review book). Physics is extremely tough (i’ve heard) so it wouldn’t hurt to study a little.
Scores come out on Thursday I believe. Let us CC’ers know how you did!

I would change those 2 numbers to 700 & 750, respectively. Just a matter of opinion. Physics & Chem are both difficult in their own respects. Physics I self studied 75% of & managed a 760. It has a great curve, while Chemistry’s isn’t as bad. I say wait until their AP counterparts. If you’re not taking them junior year, study as much as possible of whichever you think you could score high on.
I agree with risubu, wait until Thursday for your scores.

The reason why I said 650 is because some of the bs/md programs I’m familiar with say “one needs at least above 650 to be competitive.” IMO i think 650 is a bit low for a bs/md program. So DISREGARD WHAT I SAID PREVIOUSLY, I guess. @schoolisfun sounds more informed. Perhaps we should get a third opinion…
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-act-tests-test-preparation/802530-what-considered-good-sat-subject-test-score.html</a> maybe this thread could help you a bit when scores come out.

I’m a rising Senior so I cannot wait for APs.

Okay so when you get your score back, if its too low for your liking, retake it in october and study NOW. don’t study the night before. Do a little bit of chem each day this summer and your score is bound to get better. focus on chem and less on physics.

^Agreed. There’s nothing to say you can’t study for both every day. You just need to spend like 1-2 hours each

Good link, i skimmed it & realized, you should look at percentiles as well. However, I like to think 750+ is competitive for Ivys & Bs/md, while 700+ is merely the qualifier, if you get what I’m saying

I would try to raise that score for Chemistry.

Alright thanks guys. That makes sense since I already learned everything from Chemistry and now all I have to do is focus on boosting my score. I’m also planning on retaking the SAT in the Fall. Which should I do first, the SAT or Subject test in October? I’m taking the ACT too btw for the first time.

Why take the ACT if you’re retaking the SAT? What’s your SAT score? Ad-coms say “once the kid hits 2100, we start looking at other things.” no need to start the whole ACT project if you’ve got a stellar SAT

Let’s just say I did not do very well on the SAT. I think I could do a lot better on the ACT though.

Hmmm…this depends if you are applying ED to schools, because some let you take the Nov. SAT. I’m not quite sure about the policy for this. might want to search the threadds.

So whatcha get??? :D

710 Math 2
550 Chemistry :(

aww sorry but good job on math2! so take the act in september. what do plan on doing in college? something science related? if so, take chem again in october.

I plan on doing mechanical engineering or computer science. I’m not surprised by my Chemistry score since I did not prepare very much for it. Should I just scrap my SAT score and focus on the ACT only? I prepped more for the SAT but I feel I can perform better on the ACT.

yeah i guess you should focus on the ac more cuz its your first time taking it. plus the act has science, and more punctuation related stuff on the writing, so it might need more attention.

You will probably do really well on the ACT; it’s much easier than the SAT. My current SAT score is an 1860 (Yikes!), but I have a 33 on the ACT. For me, it is a much easier test to take. Plus the science section is super easy.
