My children have finished an AP Chem and got 86%-82% for their final exam. They are planning to take a CC’s General Chem 1 before taking the subject test. Do you think it will help? They want to get > 750 in Chem subject test. Thanks.
SAT Subject Tests cover HS chem. AP Chem covers college chem and covers fewer topics than is tested by the Subject Test. So their best course of action is to take a practice exam to identify gaps in knowledge, and then review the corresponding topics.
Taking cc general chem seems to be a total waste of time if they’ve already taken AP Chem. There may be valid reasons for them to take general chem when they attend a 4 year university, but that’s beyond the scope of your question.
Also note, if your kids are planning on post-grad work, there are some programs (e.g. med school) where college courses taken in HS are calculated into the GPA regardless of how/if the undergraduate college gives credit.
Thank you, skieurope! They are only 13 and 14 now so post-grad is still quite in a far distance. For my curiosity, what are those programs?
Law school and med school are the key ones.
2 years ago, my kid took the AP exam for Chem (5) and then 5 days later took the AP Chem subject test and got a 780, with zero practice. Since my kid never took a regular Chem class, only the AP Chem class, my guess (don’t take my word for it though) is that the topics in AP Chem cover the vast majority of what is on the Subject test.
