I am considering taking the subject tests for chemistry and math 2 in the fall. Last year I took Pre-calculus, which covers trig, and AP statistics so I have probably covered most of the topics on the math 2 test. However, I have only taken one chemistry 1 honors course and won't take AP chem until next year so I am certain that there will be several subjects on the SAT test that I have not covered in my class.

I'd like to know which prep books are the best for these two tests. Preferably the books would cover all of the topics on the test so that I know what to study and have several realistic practice tests. I would love to hear which books other people have successfully used to get high scores, especially if they were starting in a situation where they didn't have much outside prep to begin with. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I took the chemistry subject test two weeks ago without having taken AP Chem and thought I did fine. Take a practice test and see how you do, I think you’ll be surprised.

Hmm…I bought Barron’s for chem, but didn’t really use it to study for the subject test. However, it was really in-depth (which I appreciate), and I read through a few chapters during the year to help with unit tests in school. I found that my honors class was sufficient for the SAT II and pretty much covered everything, and all I really ended up doing was a bunch of practice tests at the bookstore. Like, I took ALL 20 or so tests in the current and previous editions of PR, all the tests in 5 Steps, a test from Kaplan (don’t recommend, the test was bs), all the released exams including the ones from the 1900s, and two from Barron’s.

I obviously don’t know my score yet, but I think I got over a 750. I was averaging 780 on the PR ones and got a ~720 on the Barron’s one, which I wasn’t too happy about, but people say Barron’s is a lot harder, so not really complaining.

The review books sometimes cover more detail than what is going to be on the test. I’m not saying don’t buy a book, but use the book you buy wisely. You can find a book for a good price on Amazon.

Be sure to compare what it in the book and what topics the college board says are on the test. Don’t study a topic in the book that is not on the test.

Usually people recommend Barron’s for Math 2. I have it myself and thought it was decent.
