SAT Critical Reading thread

^hoping it’s control his emotions… i think he was talking about it and exercising it as he went along writing.

however, i guess i can kinda see how he’s trying to give advice although i think that’s more of an assumption that isn’t directly supported by text?

^thats what i thought to… i felt that he was too distraught to be giving advice to other people… it was a diary, and thus, he was speaking to himself like how you would tell yourself to breathe when you are nervous.

also, does anyone remember the sentnece completion on the nativer american boy? it was like “(insert native american name) was ______ to his native american culture: he knew this tribal language before he knew english.”

^oh i remember the question, forgot what i put… do u remember any answer choices?

for the paragraph 4 on the war passage, wasn’t one answer choice that he “switched his focus from his inner emotions to the effects of the war.” That is the one i picked, because it was best supported by the text

^ Yeah i did’t see any discussion of war in the first 3 paragraphs, so i think it was correct.

Also i put come to terms with his emotions, it seemed like the best answer.

@IBelieveSo the only other legit one was “advise aspiring authors” to something.That’s what I put but idk. I thought picking the other one was kind of a stretch.

@asterix and @studyhard they were two different questions. the answer choice “shifts attention to war” was an answer to a different question. and sadly no i dont remember the answer choices :frowning: but it was the word that meant that he was exposed to his tribal culture right?

I think that “shift attention to war” was the answer to the question in question (lol).

posted this earlier but here are my answers again

seems ok. What were your thoughts on the “Fourth paragraph is the author’s attempt to…” question? and if you have any other sections (e.g. biofuels, barbara jordan, ink, puppets) to add on we can try to get a list going. I appreciate it very much.

@eagles94
Why did you choose fashion for work?
I believe the sentence was something along the lines of
I will work this letter into a novel. (If you have a more accurate description feel free to share).

^what did you put for work? i think operate was a choice

He wanted to work the diary in to a novel, so in context work means fashion: to make into a particular form.

work is fashion. The verb to fashion means 1. To give shape or form to; make: fashioned a table from a redwood burl. 2. To train or influence into a particular state or character.
3. To adapt, as to a purpose or an occasion; accommodate.

3 makes sense in this case, because he is adapting the journal into a book.

To operate a journal into a book would be awkward phrasing and would imply that you are running the journal the same way as you would a book, which doesn’t make much sense.

@Monepo
I was one of the few people that chose exploit lol.
Exploit: To employ to the greatest possible advantage
He’s using his journal as best as he can to create a book. Maybe >.>
I know the noun is not at all relevant to its context, so this question was one of the more difficult ones.

i’d put money on any of those (eagles’) answers.

@eagle

!!!I almost have the same ones as you! And i Got the “anectodte” one wrong (darn it!!!) as well.

I missed anecdote, too! I do my questions as I read. At the time of answering that one, I was under the impression passage one would praise biofuels. Darn.

Dam, I thought anectode only refered to a personal story, not one of someone else…
