SAT for Automatic Scholarships

Hi! I'm going to be applying to colleges in the fall and unfortunately I've only taken the SAT's once. Many of my schools have great oos scholarships with a SAT cutoff just above my current scores. I'm planning on retaking SAT's in October and I'm wondering if I should wait until after the October SAT to apply to these schools in order to (hopefully) qualify for the scholarships, or if the schools would consider the Oct scores I send for my scholarship eligibility even if I apply in August or September?

Thanks!

Apply now, test later!

As long as your current scores are high enough for you to be admitted, there’s no reason to wait. Just make sure you know what the cutoff date is (at each school!) for your scores to be considered for merit scholarships.

At one of the schools (Huntsville, if I recall correctly), you can actually test right up until June of your senior year, and your scores will still count for automatic merit awards. But that is definitely the exception (and it may not even still be their current policy) - most of the other schools I looked into had a cutoff date of December.

Okay great thanks! Yeah I’ll double check with specific colleges on exact dates, but I just wanted a like general answer for right now. Thanks!

Based on your SAT scores from your other posts, you should really concentrate on bringing up your math score. Your verbal score is outstanding, but most schools look at only Verbal & Math, and those two together as it stands now for you will definitely keep you from getting the top or near top automatic scholarships at many schools. Getting your math up to 660 or higher (1400+ with your current verbal score) would probably mean many thousands more in scholarships than you can get now with your current 1310 reading/math.

It’s reading and math, I believe. Verbal is the one, sadly, that usually does not count.

Verbal is the old term in the old SAT test when there was no writing and a maximum score of 1600. It is now part of the CR.

Got it - thanks! So it’s writing that doesn’t count.

Take the ACT also. Some people score higher on that than the SAT. There is a Sept. test.

There is also a June 8 ACT. My D is taking it then. Might not be too late to register.

I’ve already taken the ACT and got a 28 which is lower than my composite for SAT and does not qualify me for most scholarships. I know I need to bring up my math scores and that’s what I’m going to do over the summer. That’s why I was asking about whether or not I should wait to apply to schools with merit scholarships.

If math is your weakness, then I would stick with the SAT. In my experience, the math section of the SAT is way easier than that of the ACT because it has no trig.
