hey im currently a sophmore and im wondering whether i should take the 2400 sat or the 1600 sat.
If I take the old 2400 sat, do I have any more advantage? Is it best to take both the old and new sat tests?
I heard you're able to receive more points if a student from the class of 2017 chooses to take the old sat test.

I am also a sophomore (Class of 2017 yayyyy). I have heard a number of things from different people. My school counselor told me to just wait until spring of my junior year to take it, because I will be “more prepared”. My personal counselor told me to take the October 2015 SAT, the old one with 2400 points, and retake once if necessary, because I have already started preparing. Personally, I will take the old SAT, and if I do well, I will not take the new SAT. I might also try out the ACT as well. The only thing is, I am concerned that college admissions will just want the new SAT scores, although this seems unlikely.

Have you started prepping yet?

I’m going to take the old SAT and maybe the new one if I feel like it (as well as the ACT). It honestly shouldn’t matter, though. There shouldn’t be a specific advantage to one or the other.

Personally I’m doing the 2015 (2400) SAT.

I started prepping already and I do well on the current SAT practice tests. However, the “redesigned” SAT is, in my opinion, a lot harder. It takes away my strengths (vocabulary/reading/writing) and replaced them with an essay format I don’t feel comfortable with and a math section I know I’ll be terrible at.

My recommendation is: if you’ve already started prepping and are doing well on the current SAT, take it next year. You’ll do well and it frees up your senior year/end of junior for all those APs, SATIIs and applications.
If you haven’t started studying at all, take the ACT instead. The SAT is being redesigned to be essentially an ACT clone. You should therefore prep for the ACT since what is on it is a sure thing, whereas there are no “real” practice materials for the new SAT. You will be more comfortable with the ACT and you’ll avoid any nasty surprises on exam day.

My advice:

Take the 2400 SAT.
SAT requires an immense amount of practice. And for the new SAT, you won’t get much.

For the 2400 SAT however, you will have tons of past papers and questions to practice. You will be much much more familiar with the pattern.

also, I’m taking the old SAT in oct will take again if i need to, but if you want national merit you will take the new PSAT and thus, to get the scholarship, must take the new SAT by default…
Shh, join the Class of 2017 thread guys.
I am barely finding out about the 2016 sat change and might want to take the current SAT. However, I have not studied AT ALL!!! Is there still a chance to study enough for it?
@suicunejms
You have 11 months left in this year. Isn’t that time enough?
Start studying now and give it in March. Else give in May. If you don’t score in May, then study till October and ace it then!
One thing to keep in mind is that regardless of which test you take, the thing you definitely don’t want to do is have to switch from one test to the other. So if you are a current 10th grader, you probably have 2 different timelines. Study over the Summer or immediately in the Fall and then you have 4 tests left - Oct, Nov, Dec, and Jan. Or maybe wait until the Fall to begin or perhaps even later and then March is your first opportunity with the new test. Obviously what you don’t want to do is begin studying in the Fall, take the test for the first time in December and/or January, and then decide you want to retake after that, at which point you are now stuck with the new exam!
