i am planning to transfer to Amherst for fall09,

right now i have complete first sem with 4.0gpa and i hope to continue the same for next sem.

the only’ concern for me is that my SAT are below competitive for Amherst (below 1800) so i guess SATs will hurt my chances of Admission.
but im eager to get inot Economics program.

so should apply for fall09 or fall10??

please feel free to comment.

I believe you would have to wait until fall 2010. If I recall, Amherst expects transfer students to have completed one full year of work at their first college prior to applying. If you check out the admissions info for transfer students on their website it should have all that information.

Silent scream, are you in a community college with that 4.0 or a SUNY school?

i m not in a community coll nor SUNY School. does that have something to do with my "4.0 GPA"???

No, but I'm just asking you. Usually, people get 3.9s-4.0s in a CC or SUNY and then tranfer out to their "dream" school. With that 4.0, I would say colleges do not need to look at your HS or SAT scores anymore. They will put more than 92% of their decision based on your current work.

I think I am too confused, why do you think this applicant would be coming from a SUNY and not somewhere else?

GAMom.. dont go there.

And as for the year before transfer, I think what they MIGHT be suggesting is that you finish a full year before transfer, not applying. If you waited until Fall 10, you'd have two years behind you OR a year and nothing for a year which makes no sense whatsoever. I would imagine they expect you to have the grades and wherewithall to complete a year at wherever you are despite applying to Amherst for transfer.

GAMom, ignore the troller.

I was curious to know where she was transferring from because it seemed as if she could've got into Amherst or not in the first place. It's not always possible to get a 4.0 GPA depending on what classes you take at other schools. I thought she went to a CC or SUNY for a year and actually decided to transfer out now, when she has the grades. My apoligy, but that 4.0 is competitive.

im from a small public university. actually i never wanted to come to this college...but as my SATs were poor and i needed good amount of scholarships i had to end up coming here.

im an international student and i graduated my highschool in first division with distinction. i do have some good EC's from my highschool and current college. so as far as i can think, the whole SAT thing crippled me.

as u said Seachai, i am planning to transfer to some of reputed colleges, because i want to gain top-notch education from top faculties with good facilities.

but now i am confused whether to apply for fall09,spring09 or fall10. cuz for fall09 i would have grades from only one sem and i wonder how colleges will take that?!!! but im thinkin to give it a shot.

As long as you have that 4.0 GPA, they won't value on your SATs as much anymore. You do have a shot, go for it.

thanks. i am worried as i have grades from only one sem...so i dont know how my application will be judged!!

I think the full year before transfer refers to the ability to transfer to Amherst for second semester, but it does not apply the first year.

"I think the full year before transfer refers to the ability to transfer to Amherst for second semester, but it does not apply the first year."

i cudnt get it modadunn. r u trying to say second year instead of "second semester". please state it clearly

What I am saying is that it appears amherst accepts second SEMESTER transfers (meaning you can transfer into Amherst after fall semester is over -- AKA in January). HOWEVER, that would not apply to freshman students and therefore would only apply to those in their second year (or sophomores and above) in college.

So.. if you are started your freshman year at College X and found yourself hating it and wanting to transfer, you could apply to Amherst, finish out the year at College X and if accepted, begin at Amherst the beginning of your sophomore year.

This, of course, is based only on what I have gleaned from the website with no personal experience of information whatsoever. I am sure a call to the admissions office would clarify.

One question, does Amherst judge students more based on their current college work or look at both HS and College work equally?

^ Seachai,

I think I'm in a position to answer your question about how Amherst judge's individual candidates for admission.

I'm a veteran and also a non-traditional student. I also have a 4.0 after two years at my local CC.

I've had a good amount of contact with one of the Dean's at Amherst. The answer is that Amherst considers each student's unique situation when evaluating their application. The first thing they want to know is whether or not you can handle the course work, so grades are, of course, the most important aspect of one's application. After that, it all depends on your individual story. In my case, for example, I was told that they don't really care about my high school grades because it's been over 7 years since I graduated. The impressive list of extra-curriculars they look for in typical high school applicants also won't apply. According to the Dean I talked to, my military service trumps any club or school organization and will be weighted heavily.

Furthermore, you have a choice as to whether or not your standardized test scores are considered. There's a block on the transfer common app. If you check yes, then you want them to look at your scores, if you check no, they won't even go there. Now, if you're one year out of high school they may place more weight on those scores. In my situation, they don't really care.

The impression I got from their admission's office, is that Amherst College wants to know what you've done lately - not what you did five years ago. They want to know whether you'd make a good addition to the school TODAY - not whether who you were five years ago would have made it.

So even if I haven't been doing so well in my Freshmen and Sophomore year, I still have a chance to make up my work if I improve in my Junior year right? I hope they don't take my Fresh and Soph yr grades into consideration when I transfer. I was an immature teenager at those times, I was generally a very good student, but didn't use my ability too well. l learned my big lesson and that mistake was to not get Bs in High School, because it can affect an unfair life to an individual.
