SAT I Writing Section: Does it matter?

This may have been discussed on another thread, so please direct me to it if it has.

But, the question is:

How much do colleges even look at the (new) writing section? Which colleges care most/least about it (I heard UChicago doesn't look at it at all)? Isn't the section kind of irrelevant since colleges can look at your writing in the essay(s) you submit?

I think they look at it. The essays you produce are long-term though. The SAT is impromptu writing, which is a lot of what you do in college. The writing section is probably going to be used to take a glint at your essay and see how you write on the spot.

after e-mailing/calling colleges admission offices, they said it would be the "deciding factor"

I think one more year will pass before colleges really start to look into, after that it'll def be fair play. Though that's not going to stop them from looking at them, and I would agree with above, that especially the essay score will prob be looked into if anything.
