SAT II Chemistry 2011

Okay, so...
I have been studying for the SAT II Chem Test since...like...October after the PSAT. First I used Sparknotes and took all three practice tests in which I was stuck in the 500s. Then I took one from PR and got a 680 (decent for now). I took two more from Barron's and still got 680's :/

What I wanna know is, is Barron's harder than the real test? Because Im getting all these lab questions and I have no idea how to approach them. They seem so...foreign. They show nothing, just the setup and some information (which doesn't help). And there are some topics that I heard aren't even on the test. I have like less than a month left.

The thing is, I took SAT II Bio last year and got a 700, however, I was stuck in the mid-600s throughout the year so I'm hoping the same thing will happen this year.

What was your opinion on the Chem test? Did you find it easy or hard? Is Barron's good? Everytime I try studying it they throw sooo much info at me that I feel as though I have to memorize all the little details.

I’ve never used Barron’s before for SATs, but from my experience with standardized tests in general, Barron’s is a lot harder than the actual exam. I used Sparknotes and Princeton Review, and I feel I scored a near 800.

Just know that the curve on Chemistry is quite generous (at least 5 questions, I think). I just took it last week, and I thought it was fairly easy although I did admittedly miss some stupid ones. There was only 1 question I had absolutely no idea about. Most of the questions are fairly general, I think :/

How does the test compare to the AP Test? I found the AP Chem test this year to be relatively easy.

+100 points since it’s barrons. 780? perhaps

Thanks a lot guys
+100?
Seriously?
Wow.
Yea I heard Barron’s was harder and I also heard that it had a lot of extra material that wasnt tested.
I also checked the scale on PR and only a 60 raw score was required to get a 700 which seems pretty good.
Anymore advice?

I highly doubt that it’s plus 100 points…I’d say 50 at the very most. As for the comparison to the AP exam, actually, this years AP exam was super hard, especially the FRQs, when looked at in comparison to previous years. The multiple choice, though, was easy, and the multiple choice on the SATs are more challenging. But once again, there is a very strong curve.

There better be a strong curve
Well I’ve. kind of, consisitently been getting 700s on the practice tests but then when I used the tests on Barron’s CD, I dropped a lot
like high 600’s
Im not good at compute tests
That and they gave me only 35 minutes to do that last 45
it was like 45 minutes for the first part (classification) 60 minutes for the t/f and 45 for the last one…

Soo uhh how was ur experience with SAT CHem
Test’s in 2 days…
OO

The SAT II Chemistry test is easier than the AP. The material covered is very similar, but the format is somewhat different.

Barron’s is slightly harder than the real thing. I used their prep book and found it helpful. Don’t get too discouraged with the practice test scores. Maybe you just need to review your labs. I don’t remember there being too many lab questions – maybe 1 or 2.

I pulled of a 710 dude it wasn’t too hard. They just have a few questions that equivocate and are a little difficult. Other than that, if you’ve been a good student in Chemistry all year long and have at least listened to the lectures and/or read the book, you should be able to score a decent 700 or above. I really wish I scored over 710 though. :(

Thanks
I just took it and I skipped 12…
is there a trhead to discuss it after the embargo has been lifted?

Anyone who took it today, I had no clues on the identification of the lab equipment, i just guessed on all 4. Any ideas?

was the first one magnet and cardboard?
cuz iron fillings
u can separate using a magnet
and i think the colored ink was chromatographic paper

I think I guessed the cardboard for the iron. I don’t think I used the chromatography on any of my answers.

it made the most sense to me
removing NaCl from water was distillation i think

which ones were the spectator ions?
it was H+ and Cl-
right?

I guessed those too, because they weren’t being oxidized or reduced.

What did you guys get for the balancing question with like CO3 in the reactants, and I think there was CA+2, and H2O somewhere or something like that. I can’t really remember the whole reaction but I remember that I had trouble with it. My answer was D/coefficient of 4.

I think separating ink was chromatography… made more sense than the other ones that’s for sure.

H+ and Cl- since they stayed aqueous and were not oxidized or reduced? that was my reasoning.

@giatns not sure… there were so many CO3s in that test haha.
