Ok, so I’m taking the Chinese SAT II tomorrow, and I haven’t really been prepping so I’m paranoid. Can anyone tell me…

About the reading comprehension section- How long are the passages? Like an entire page?

About the listening section- How quickly do they speak and about how difficult is it? (Just in your opinion.)

don't worry my sister managed to get in the high 600's... she can barely read 2nd grade chinese and hasn't heard/spoken chinese for the past 8 years or so!!! should be a piece of cake for you.

Passages are not long at all. About 1/4 of a page.
Listening comprehension is easy too. Remember to bring headphones and cassette player (not sure if it's cd or cassette).
I took it 3 years ago and I thought it was stupid. Just don't loose concentration on the listening section because you are not allowed to go back.

I'm sorry but, why are you taking the SAT2 Chinese? Even if you score an 800 you're only shooting yourself in the foot. Take this into account:

Every prestigious university gets thousands of asians applying to their system. Some of the UC's, for example, have a landslide more of asians than caucasians even. I think berkeley is 45% asian and 30% caucasian.

The number one thing schools want is diversity. Stanford, Harvard, Duke, Princeton, Yale, etc. reject countless applicants who are valedictorians and countless who score perfect on the SATs. If you are asian and want to get into these schools, taking the SAT2 Chinese is NOT to your advantage AT ALL. Every Zhou or Wang is taking it and scoring 800. That SAT2 has the highest average score by quite a margin. Just look at the paper the College Board sends you when you get your scores. All those colleges are going to think that you feel so insecure about your abilities that you have to resort to the SAT2 Chinese.

So yea just as a piece of advice, take something that works towards your major. The only way an 800 on the Chinese might help is if you want to study Chinese language/culture, etc. If you want to major in engineering, take PHYSICS! or chem!

That's sound advice, but since Chinese is (becoming) a very important language and I want the college admissions people to know that I know Chinese. Plus, if I didn't take it, they might wonder why, seeing as how "every Zhou or Wang" is taking it.

Anyway, it's a bit too late, sadly- the test is tomorrow and I want my $17's worth or whatever amount it is.

Unless you score an 800, the Chinese SAT II isn't worth using. Don't look at it from a raw score perspective, but a percentile perspective. What's more impressive, 95th percentile on a history SAT II, or 56th percentile on the Chinese SAT II?

And sorry, but they're not going to wonder why you didn't take it like every other Chinese speaker. They might even be relieved.

so is it bad to take the chinese sat II if you're chinese? I know most of the ppl who take it are native speakers and the percentile is pretty messed up. But is is better to take the French SAT II instead of the Chinese one then? I'm taking it in two weeks, and I've heard it's not that hard for native speakers...

ps: does anyone know a good website to take the practice chinese sat ii? i can't seem to find one, and it's frustrating since the test is in two weeks and i haven't even studied yet.

I took the SAT II Chinese... I guess I'm considered a native speaker although I learned Chinese and English at the same time... it's not necessarily bad to take it, having an 800 is NOT a bad thing, but if you do poorly, that may reflect badly. There are usually not a lot of websites or prep book, the SAT Subject test booklet contains a mini test and the rest you just have to depend on your Chinese base...

Hey, I’m not Chinese at all. I’ve already taken MathII and Physics (750, 770) and need a humanity. I think I could get at least high 600’s. My record shows that I haven;t taken any courses in it, and I am self taught, so I think it would look pretty good, but like you guys said, it is saturated with 800’s, and I wouldn’t want the college to assume I have a Chinese relative that could help me.

So should I take the exam? (Otherwise, I’ll take Spanish, as I’m just about fluent.)
