Hey I am taking this test along with USH and Math IIC in october; I am a Senior and these are probably the last standardized tests I will take this year besides APs. Basically, I am very familiar with the latter two but unfamiliar iwith the former, hence my query. How similar is SAT II Lit to Critical Reading on the SAT and AP English? I got an 800 and a 5 respectively, so am I good to go, or is there another type of format/emphasis on literary elements I should be aware of? Thanks in advance.

I got an 800 and a 5 on the SAT and AP, respectively, but I got a 720 on the SAT II Lit. I'd recommend doing a tiny bit of studying to address the specific format of the SAT II Lit test.

Wow didn't expect to see that kind of discrepancy- how was the format different? More technically oriented, or more rhetorically centered? Does anyone have any suggestions for guides/practice tests to study for it, in that case?

bump i really need some input on this

It seems like when I took it there were quite a few specific questions about literary devices and elements that you actually had to know. I think that you need to buy a review book. I have also had very very high scores on standardized critical reading and english tests in the past and I only got a 700 on the SAT II literature.

I think the AP format was much more familiar. The AP asks "What is the significance of _," and the SAT II asks "What is the specific literary device in _."

Of course, had I studied for the SAT II, I probably could have done a lot better. I too test well and read plenty, so I don't think that our low Lit scores are representative of any lack of ability, only lack of preparation.

I wish I could help you more here, since I am retaking the SAT II Lit in October. Maybe my results are just a discrepancy. I didn't get enough sleep. (Then again, I did well on my other tests that morning.)

Anyone else have similar or different experiences with the SAT II Lit test?

bump, this is a good discussion. any tips/suggestions from people who have scored WELL? Besided preparedness, or maybe that is the only key. In that case what is the best way to prepare?

so if I got a 780 on CB's 22 real SAT IIs...that's not a good indicator?

cz ghlion, CB real SAT II's is the real thing...a 780 is comparable to a 780. If you are happy w/ a 780 (which you should be), then you have no worries. :)

I just took mine this weekend. I felt literary devices were just short of irrelevant. Sure there are a couple...but you prob. will know them anyway. I think practice tests is the key, and make sure you take CB's real one + a couple of the most accurate tests you can find (PR's seemed pretty good). Other than that, an 800 reading should be sufficient.

Dragging this up again to see if anyone has any additional suggestions on the Eng. Lit. My son found out that he needs to take one more SAT II in January. He had Bio, US Hist, and World Hist, but one of his schools requires that the 3 tests be in completely different fields. He plans to take the Eng Lit, since he did fine on AP Lit and CR.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what book to use, what to study, etc.?

Thanks.

Couldn't tell you--I didn't study for it at all, whereas for my other 2 I studied. And I did the best on Lit, with an 800. Tell me how that works???

One suggestion I'd give you is to take it first, if you're planning on taking any others, if you want the best score--your mind will be freshest. My scores declined in direct proportion to the order in which I took them. Another suggestion: Go with your first instinct. You should really strive to get through every section rather than spend a lot of time on one section. Literature is about feeling.

Another tip which you may already know: Read through the passage quick as you can, then go to the questions. Many of them say, "in these lines...." and give you numbers, so you don't have to look at the whole text when you go back to it. Love that!

Much of the test is about tone and feeling, again.

Good luck!

I rocked an 800 cr and 5 ap english lit as well, just buy a book so you can be familiar with all the random literary terms that usually appear on like 1-3 questions eg anachronism, synaesthesia, etc. i got a 780 on the lit and only studied these stupid terms for like 20 minutes before the test.

Huh. I don't remember either of those being on my test. Meh...

Are the practice tests in the Kaplan prep book comparable? I've got the Real SAT II's book, but I kind of want to save the real test for last.

The terms for me are a piece of cake; it's the interpretation that's difficult. I do well on AP English exams, but this SAT II is killing me.
