Duke requires two SAT II's. I decided to take math for one of them...
Is it better to take Math I and score higher or should I challenge myself to take Math II and maybe score lower? Any advice is appreciated!

A lot of students on this forum will tell you to take II because it has a good curve and you can score really high. My son and my niece thought II was really hard (she had taken college calc as a hs junior at Ursinus) and didn't do that well. Both did well on Math I. Depends how strong you are in math, I guess and how well you prepare. Neither S or Niece prepared at all.

Many schools require IIC, so I would take IIC and skip IC. My daughter took both and did better IIC.

Hard to say. Math I is easier but the "curve" is usually worse -- having the same number wrong on both tests results in a lower Math I score than you would get on Math II. So you should not assume that you will naturally score higher on Math I. If you do well in math and have had through at least pre-calc, you might actually score higher on math II. Another consideration is where else you are applying as some have a preference for math II-- the UCs do not accept math I and Stanford highly recommends that one of the IIs submitted be math II.

Thank you, everyone.

What score on Math IIC is considered "decent" - good enough to be considered by top-notch colleges? What about Math IC?

750+ is usually pretty good for Ivy Leagues and Stanford for Math IIC.

I think pretty much all of the Ivy Leagues would prefer Math IIC than IC. This is because it shows a desire to challenge yourself since it's more difficult in terms of its material.

I see. I've decided to take Math IIC.

Get a Math SATII prep book. They should have both tests in the book. Try one of each and see. I think you can get 5-6 wrong on the 2 and still get an 800.

Math 2 is really easy if youve taken a precalc course. and you can get like 5 wrong and still have an 800, as opposed to math 1 where they dock you 50 points for just 1 question wrong

My son and my niece both had good pre-calc courses (and she had calc) and both thought II was really hard. Make sure you prep.

I remember that something ridiculous like 40% of the people who take the Math IIC exam get an 800. Because of the curve, that's pretty much the expectation for a top school.

For the SATI, you can get 750+ and the top schools will pretty much consider that as competitive as an 800.

Thanks to all of you... :) I'll make sure I do some prep. I've taken calc as a junior but I think I still might need to brush up on some of the things. Could anyone recommend me a good prep book for math IIC?

the Barrons book for 2c is waaaay harder than the real thing, but it really gets you prepared well.

Both. The fee isn't outrageous per test and what does it hurt.

Sparknotes work wonder.

I used it for the Math 1C and got a 800.

Great! Thanks, radyland and p-izzle.
