I have decided that I am going to take a Math SAT II in either May or June along with my other 2 SAT IIs. Could anybody offer advice as to which Math SAT they recommend. Based on the different curves of the different tests and the subject material tested on both tests. I have heard that the level 2 has a huge curve, is this true? I am currently in an Honor Pre-Calc class, so would I know all the subject material on the level 2 test? Any answers would be much appreciated!

Well, I'm in the same situation as you (currently in pre-cal). However, I may be in a worse position because we have block scheduling, thus some of the topics will not be covered until late May or even early June. That being said if you feel that you pre-cal has taught you much of anything it's probably better to take Level II. I think you can usually have a raw score of 44 (out of 50) and still make a 800, while there is no such generous curve on the Level I test.

I am an international so I am not sure of the distinctions between calculus algebra etc.

I am myself a math person and I did both math tests.

I got 740 in math1 and 800in math2. However, I did actually answer two questions which I never had time to fill in the answersheet (I know people could tell me this is a lame excuse but it's the truth) So I left two blanks on the math 1.

With these 2 questions anwered I would have got an 800 in math1 which puts me in 99+ percentile while a 800 on math 2 is 92 percentile.

So if you are good with maths I would problably take math1 and do great on it.

To sum up I did "answer" all questions correctly. Both on math1 and math2 I managed to solve all problems even though two on math1 were left blank. :(

knikac, what are planning on studying in college?

Math II has a huge curve, so you can still get an 800 while missing up to 5 or 6. I took both, and I got a 780 on Math I (probably the result of missing one question) while being in the 99th percentile. I was low 90s for Math II, but I still got an 800.

You can take both Math 1 and Math 2? Son is a low B average in Honors Math. He's planning on Math 1. But do you think the curve will hurt him? He's currently taking Analysis, will be lucky to get a B by the skin of his teeth.

It really depends on what math your son is taking. If his math class has covered topics such as trigonometry, math II would be preferable simply because of the curve. Otherwise, there is no real point taking a test without learning the material, so math I is the only option if he has not learned pre-calc material yet.

Prospective engineering/science majors should probably take Math II...
