SAT II Russian

<p>Hey all,</p>

<p>I'm wondering if someone could give me some information on the SAT II Russian test. Has anyone took the test? If so, was it very difficult? </p>

<p>I want to know things like to what extent will I have to know the vocabulary. Can I get by knowing 20 percent of the Russian vocabulary?</p>

<p>it’s not a language that people take in school, or that people will be willing to pay money in order to demonstrate competency in</p>

<p>I think some people take the language in school, IBfootballer. I think the OP was simply expressing disappointment, nothing else. . .</p>

<p>I wish that there was an SAT II Russian and an SAT II Arabic but, so many people are open only to Spanish and French, :(. However, there is an AP test for Russian! Its harder but I bet it could be accomplished.</p>

<p>Back in the day, there used to be a lot of people studying Russian to be Kremlinologists - not so much since the collapse. Russia is not so business-investment friendly, so more people are studying Chinese these days. I think the AP folks would pick it up if there were more demand.</p>

<p>It isn’t impressive to anyone (including college adcoms) if a native speaker gets an 800 in german, chinese, korean, etc…</p>

<p>I assume you are referring to the CR or W sections on the SAT. These sections actually test sophisticated grammar and reasoning. They not only test your literacy, but also test your reasoning skills. </p>

<p>The SATII foreign language tests, on the other hand, test for basic understanding and competency of the language. The SATII german, for instance, does not test anything beyond the 5th grade level for native germans - thus it is hardly impressive at all if a native gets an 800 in a language of his or her native tongue.</p>

<p>Actually I know several schools that offer Russian. It’s really strange that there is no Sat for it since there is an AP. Russian is definitely offered more then Hebrew and maybe more than/same as Korean and Italian (all of which also have an Sat)</p>

<p>Unfortunately, neither an AP exam or an SAT subject test is available for Russian because there are not enough interested participants to make it profitable for College Board (runs both AP and SAT). However, there is a “prototype” AP being offered by the American Council of Teachers of Russian. This was initially created to be an actual AP before College Board came to its decision that it would not be profitable enough to implement. It has been maintained and updated to the highest standards, and is, according to my Russian teacher, harder than the test to qualify to be a high school teacher of Russian in Illinois (he helped edit questions for both tests). This prototype, unfortunately is not recognized by colleges with the same merit as other AP’s, but is still a great test of your skills if you’re interested.</p>
